Radio Marti’ is back on the air. 

Here’s why its signal is likely not reaching Cuba

Despite an earlier announcement that Radio Martí was back on the air following a presidential executive order that suddenly halted the U.S.-funded radio broadcasting to Cuba, its signal is probably not reaching the island because its shortwave transmitters remain silent. Early in March, President Donald Trump issued an executive order mandating that the U.S. Agency for Global Media — the parent agency of Voice of America and the Office of Cuba Broadcasting, which oversees Radio and TV Martí and the online news site Martí Noticias — reduce operations to a minimum. 

All Martí employees and senior management at the Office of Cuba Broadcasting were placed on leave, and the radio station stopped transmitting for the first time in four decades.

On historic anniversary Martís filling information gap on crackdown

MIAMI —  On the one-year anniversary of the historic July 11 protests in Cuba, in which Cubans took to the streets in unprecedented numbers to protest decades of oppression and demand basic freedoms, Radio and Televisión Martí are providing audiences on the island with uncensored and reliable information on the demonstrations and the subsequent — and ongoing — government crackdown. 

“Cubans deserve to know the truth about how their government has responded to last year’s protests,” said Director of the Office of Cuba Broadcasting Sylvia Rosabal. “As the network of record, we are helping audiences on the island understand the severity of the government’s suppression — thousands of years of detention have been sentenced, just for speaking out.” 

Puestos y Conectados, a new three-part web series, provides audiences with vivid and unfiltered information on what led to the nationwide demonstrations: increasing economic distress, the government’s tepid COVID-19 response, and the harsh crackdown on artists deemed critical of the government.  

Using never-before-seen footage, almost 90 percent of which comes from cell phones, the series also provides a complete and detailed look at the developments of that day. 

“Cubans on the island have limited options for information on the protests, what led up to them, and how the government has responded,” said Rosabal. “The government denies it, while international broadcasters cater to their audiences overseas. This leaves Cubans with unverified reports and rumors. Our journalists have sorted through thousands of hours of footage, and verified reports to provide our audiences with contextualized, reliable, and truthful information they can’t find anywhere else.” 

Another video series, Madres del #11J, provides a unique and compelling look at the impact of the crackdown by speaking with families of some of the more than 550 people —20 of whom are minors—sentenced to jail time for their participation in the demonstration.  

In addition to the special programming and several new podcast episodes, Radio and Televisión Martí has developed an interactive map geolocating reports, photos, and footage from demonstrations in more than 50 cities across the country. 

The Martís’ coverage on the July 11 anniversary will include reports from independent journalists on the island, expert analysis, responses from multiple U.S. government representatives, and reaction from the Cuban diaspora — including planned demonstrations in Washington, D.C., and various locations in Spain, Mexico, Argentina, and elsewhere.  

Last year, despite disruptions to social media platforms in Cuba, the network saw a more than 320 percent increase in Facebook content consumption, and the network is bracing for additional government censorship attempts. In addition to Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and Instagram content, Radio Martí will broadcast continuing coverage of the anniversary via short and medium wave radio to the island. This multi-platform approach will help audiences access the information in spite of any internet blockages imposed by the government.

Protests take place across Cuba as the country faces shortages of COVID-19 vaccines and basic necessities

Thousands of Cubans took to the streets in Havana and in other cities to demand vaccines and food on Sunday as the country faces a period of an economic crisis brought on by the global COVID-19 pandemic. People criticized President Miguel Díaz-Canel, saying "down with the dictatorship," according to the Miami Herald. In a speech addressing the country, Díaz-Canel blamed the United States for the unrest, according to Reuters.

Cuba sees biggest protests for decades as pandemic adds to woes

HAVANA, July 11 (Reuters) - Chanting "freedom" and calling for President Miguel Diaz-Canel to step down, thousands of Cubans joined street protests from Havana to Santiago on Sunday in the biggest anti-government demonstrations on the Communist-run island in decades.

The protests erupted amid Cuba's worst economic crisis since the fall of the Soviet Union, its old ally, and a record surge in coronavirus infections, with people voicing anger over shortages of basic goods, curbs on civil liberties, and the authorities' handling of the pandemic.

Thousands took to the streets in various parts of Havana including the historic centre, their shouts of “Diaz-Canel step down” drowning out groups of government supporters waving the Cuban flag and chanting "Fidel."

WRMI to carry Radio Marti during September

According to Jeff White of WRMI speaking at the EDXC conference in Bratislava, Slovakia on September 1, WRMI will carry Radio Marti for a month starting tomorrow on 5950 kHz:

This test runs until the end of the baseball season with many Cuban players involved in matches.

Radio and TV Marti's New Attempt to Penetrate Cuba

HAVANA TIMES – The Cuban government warned on Thursday against Radio and TV Marti’s new attempt to begin broadcasting its programming on the island starting on August 13, the birthdate of the late Fidel Castro, according to the official Cubadebate website.

The government denounces that “radioelectric attacks affect the normal functioning of national telecommunications and directly violate the letter and spirit of numerous international agreements.”

The warning responds to the announcement of the new director of the Office of Transmissions to Cuba (OCB, for its acronym in English), Tomas Regalado, that Radio and TV Martí will “soon” be throughout Cuba, without interference and in high definition, notes dpa news.

“Millions of dollars of US taxpayers money is wasted every year to try to take the propaganda from Miami to Cuban territory. All the methods tried thus far clashed with the effectiveness of the authorities to block the signals, which constitute a violation of international standards for the use of radioelectric space,” says the article in Cubadebate.

Core BBG Activities to Continue During U.S. Government Shutdown October 1, 2013

Many parts of the Broadcasting Board of Governors have had to shut down due to a lapse in appropriations for the U.S. federal government, but BBG-supported media are still bringing news and information programs to audiences around the world.

U.S. international media activities under the BBG that are deemed "foreign relations essential to national security," such as news programming and distribution, are excepted from the shutdown and will continue. Information follows on ongoing operations as well as cancellations.

Broadcasting and Distribution of Programming

The networks under the BBG will continue to produce and distribute news and information in 61 languages to audiences in more than 100 countries. This programming from both the federal and non-federal networks will carry on with support from a reduced staff of the International Broadcasting Bureau.

Voice of America (VOA) and the Office of Cuba Broadcasting (Radio and TV Martí), along with the grantee broadcasting networks -- Radio Free Asia, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, and the Middle East Broadcasting Networks (Alhurra TV and Radio Sawa) -- will continue programming during the appropriations lapse.

The BBG networks will cover breaking news and high-priority live programming. The current broadcasting distribution schedule will remain in place, while the numbers of support personnel are reduced. Internet and new media operations will continue as necessary for overseas audiences. Further information detailing the agency's operations plan for a lapse in appropriations, along with FAQs can be found here.


Events and Other Activities

The BBG-Gallup Research Briefing planned for October 2 on media use in Mali and Somalia is postponed until further notice.

Cubans Respond with Enthusiasm to Marti Listener Contest

Miami, Fl., Jan. 12, 2012 – More than 2,600 Cubans contacted Radio Martí for a chance to win one of six mopeds in a listener contest sponsored by the station.

The contest, which ran from Dec. 19 to Jan. 5, raffled off six mopeds donated by Cuban-Americans and provided important insight into the Cuban audience’s use of shortwave and AM radio as well as social media. Martí asked Cubans to call, e-mail, Twitter or subscribe to Facebook for a chance to win.

“The positive audience feedback for this moped raffle and our new forward-leaning programming reinforces our program choices,” said Carlos García Pérez, Director of Radio and TV Martí. “It is compelling to hear from Cubans about attitudinal changes on the island, incremental changes underway, and how closely connected they continue to feel to the U.S. and Cuban-American community in particular.”

The listener contest is part of a year-long effort by Radio and TV Martí to reshape programming to better match the interests of young Cubans who face economic hardships as well as ongoing political restrictions. Through numerous focus groups with Cubans who have recently arrived in the U.S., as well as daily call-in programs and contests like these, Cubans consistently express their interests in technology, economic opportunities, entertainment and connecting with Americans.

The Martís have responded with a series of program initiatives to make programming relevant to the day-to-day lives of young people on the island. Shows like Avanza Cuba (Cuba Forward), look at the incremental changes underway in Cuba and future opportunities in technology and business; while El Revotillo (The Scramble) provides an on-air market for trading goods and services; and other news and entertainment programs foster enhanced audience participations through mobile, online and social media tools.

The Office of Cuba Broadcasting, which is funded by the U.S. government through the Broadcasting Board of Governors, was established in 1990 to oversee the operations of Radio and TV Martí, which broadcast news and information to the people of Cuba.

Marti Program Bridging Cuban and American Business

An innovative Martí program focuses on the future of Cuba through conversations bridging Cuban and American business people as part of the next episode of Avanza Cuba (Cuba Forward), scheduled for December 14, 2011 from 11am to 12pm.

The program, to be broadcast from Radio Martí’s Miami studios, will feature Cuban bloggers and entrepreneurs from within the island, in conversation with Cuban business owners in Union City, New Jersey, as well as other special guests and audience participation. The episode focuses on the nascent Cuban business community made up of "cuentapropistas", a uniquely Cuban term for entrepreneurs which roughly translates as "being-on-their-owns".

“We are providing a unique opportunity for Cubans interested in starting or operating small businesses to ask questions and share their experiences with practitioners in Miami, London and New Jersey,” said Carlos Garcia Pérez, Director of Radio and TV Martí. “The incremental relaxation of the market rules in Cuba invites a rich conversation about the current environment as well as the future of the Island.

Avanza Cuba premiered in September 2011, featuring prominent Cuban bloggers, professors, and students discussing new media and the role of technology in Cuba. The program incorporates all of the Martí’s radio, TV, and online streams and aims to create a dialogue and share information to help Cubans make educated decisions about the future of their country.

Cuban dissidents urge U.S. to keep Radio, TV Marti

HAVANA, Feb 10 (Reuters) - Cuban dissidents on Tuesday urged the United States to continue beaming Radio and TV Marti to the communist-run island, despite recent U.S. criticism that the broadcasts reach few Cubans and have questionable journalistic standards.

They said the two outlets, which are directed by the Miami-based Office of Cuba Broadcasting agency and aimed at supporting opposition to the Cuban government, provided a useful voice in a country where the media is state-run.
