Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
08 - 14 December 2008

Solar activity was very low during 08 - 10 December with no flare activity observed. Activity increased to low levels on 11 December by virtue of an isolated low-level C-class flare from Region 1009 (S25, L = 146, class/area Dso/050 on 10 December). Region 1009 emerged on 10 December as a simply-structured spot group. It departed the visible disk early on 13 December. Activity decreased to very low levels during 12 - 14 December with no flare activity observed. A filament disappearance (location N50W15) occurred between 12/0600 - 0800 UTC and was associated with a slow CME off
the northwest limb based on SOHO/LASCO C2 data.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels during 08 - 10 December.

Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet levels at all latitudes during most of the period. ACE solar wind measurements indicated a subsiding coronal hole high-speed stream was in progress at the start of the period. Velocities gradually decreased from 532 to 314 km/sec during 08 - 10 December. A solar sector boundary crossing (away (+) to toward (-)) occurred late on 10 December associated with minor increases in velocity, plasma density, and IMF total field intensity.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
17 December 2008 - 12 January 2009

Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels during 02 - 06 January.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at quiet levels during 17 - 21 December. Activity is expected to increase to unsettled levels during 22 - 24 December due to a recurrent coronal hole high speed stream (CH HSS). Activity is expected to decrease to quiet levels during 25 - 30 December. Activity is expected to increase to unsettled levels during 31 December - 02 January due to another recurrent CH HSS. Activity is expected to decrease to quiet levels during 03 - 12 January.

The December 10 program of "Ye Ethiopia Adera Dimts" program , posted on ecadf is worth listening. It brought respected voices of the people that includes Eng. Hailu Shawel a popularly elected opposition leader, Obang Metho and Tamagen, activists from the Diaspora on its program.

I hope this young radio will continue to entertain voices that will make real differences in Ethiopia and avoid the trap of being the voice of any party. The name "Adera" in Ethiopia has a big connotation. One of the saying in Ethiopia in Amharic, "Ye Tesete Adera Ke Mitefa Ye Woledute Yitfa" shows, promise/Adera given to someone has much more value even than once own child and never to be abandoned at any circumstance.

Radios who are the voices of parties and other independent radios like "Adera" have big job of mobilizing Ethiopians to battle the TPLF racist thugs on all fronts and they should be supported and encouraged by the public.

Let us all promise to focus on the real enemy, TPLF, and bring freedom to our people by respecting our differences. The next Monday (Dec. 15) rally in D.C. organized by different radio stations to call for unconditional release of Teddy Afro is an initiative which has a full support of Ethiopians and let us come out in force, snow or rain, and show Ethiopian Unity for foes and

Radio and TV Marti launche redesigned website

Radio and TV Martí launched this week a newly redesigned version of its Spanish language website, www.martinoticias.com, giving users a full spectrum of media offerings including live streaming radio and television programming. The site features more Web stories, including audio and video, allowing up to nine stories to be viewed and giving users a better idea of the full scope of the news from Cuba, Latin America and the rest of the world. The site incorporates RSS feeds, and in the near future, will provide visitors the ability to subscribe to receive e-mails of news stories in their areas of interest.
“For anyone who wants to know what’s going in Cuba today, this is the place to come,” said Pedro Roig, director of the Office of Cuba Broadcasting, which oversees Radio and TV Martí. “We want to enhance our Internet and digital media capacity and make it a priority. Our goal is to reach as many as possible, which is very difficult in Cuba.”
Other features of the site include a 24-hour news ticker, offering the latest headlines, as well as special feature news stories. According to Roig, Radio and TV Martí hope to further augment its Internet presence, possibly with a presence on social media sites YouTube and Facebook.

Zimbabwe gets vital news from VOA during crisis

Daily radio program 'Studio 7' broadcasts in English, Shona, and Ndebele

WASHINGTON, December 9, 2008 - The Voice of America (VOA) is providing Zimbabweans with vital information on health, politics and international developments during the crisis that led President Bush today to join those calling for the country's leader to step down.

"The VOA's Studio 7, broadcasting in English, Shona and Ndebele, has long played a critical role in informing the people of Zimbabwe about what is happening in their country," said VOA Executive Editor Steve Redisch. "The country's escalating crisis, and the worldwide attention to it, make accurate news and information more important than ever for Zimbabweans," he said.

In recent months, Studio 7, a daily radio program that has been on the air since 2003, has reported in detail on the humanitarian crisis that intensified as the death toll from a cholera epidemic climbed to over 600, largely as a result of a lack of water treatment and broken sewage pipes.

Several weeks ago, Studio 7 reported on the virtual closure of the state hospital system in Harare and other cities shortly before the cholera epidemic. In addition, Studio 7 has interviewed local health experts and international officials daily. Discussion segments allow listeners to voice concerns about the country, which has few basic commodities, soaring unemployment and sky-high inflation.

In recent days, Studio 7 brought listeners interviews with former U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan and former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, both members of a delegation dispatched to Zimbabwe by the international organization of eminent persons known as the Elders. The group was barred from entering Zimbabwe by the government.

Zimbabwe's humanitarian crisis - along with the refusal of President Robert Mugabe to adhere to a power-sharing agreement with designated Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai - has prompted a growing chorus of international figures to call for Mugabe to leave.

Studio 7 is funded through a grant from USAID to VOA.

The Voice of America, which first went on the air in 1942, is a multimedia international broadcasting service funded by the U.S. government through the Broadcasting Board of Governors. VOA broadcasts approximately 1,500 hours of news, information, educational, and cultural programming every week to an estimated worldwide audience of more than 134 million people. Programs are produced in 45 languages.

BBC and Deutsche Welle new DRM services airs ahead of schedule

The BBC and Deutsche Welle (DW) today launched the new Digital Radio Mondiale™ (DRM) digital radio channel for Europe that was scheduled to begin early next year. The channel is an 18-hour daily broadcast of the best international programmes in English from BBC World Service and DW. It also brings to the audience all the advantages of the DRM digital radio including near-FM quality audio, text messages, Journaline and an Electronic Programme Guide (EPG).
This first ever joint BBC-DW DRM radio channel has been launched using six transmitters, which are used in pairs, to cover much of Western Europe. The signal covers France, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg and other neighbouring countries.
The broadcast can be heard from 0500-2300 UTC on shortwave and on 1296* mediumwave. DRM digital radios can automatically tune into the best frequency using information carried with the broadcasts. The channel has a rich mix of programmes offering global news and current affairs, in-depth analysis, documentaries, cultural programmes and sports including English Premiership football and German Bundesliga.
BBC World Service is represented on the channel with flagship news and current affairs programmes such as Newshour, The World Today and Europe Today as well as Sportsworld, Science in Action and Digital Planet. DW is putting Newslink, Money Talks, Living Planet, World of Music and Eurovox on the schedule.
Erik Bettermann, Director General at Deutsche Welle, said: “This project creates a great opportunity for two of the world’s most-established broadcasters to work together. Along with the BBC, Deutsche Welle will be able to offer first-class content on an innovative platform and reintroduce listeners to DRM technology. This new channel will show European audiences the benefits of good cooperation.”
Nigel Chapman, Director BBC World Service, said: “I welcome the opportunity to reach the new audiences that the coverage from this new DRM service will bring, free of the interference and in an audio quality only available on FM and other digital services. It is also an opportunity for other broadcasters to embrace the benefits that this new technology can bring.”

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
01 - 07 December 2008

Solar activity was very low through the period. No flares were observed. The visible disk was spotless.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal levels on 01 - 05 December and at high levels on 06 - 07 December.

Geomagnetic field activity was at mostly quiet levels on 01 - 03 December. From 04 - 07 December, activity increased to unsettled to active levels, with isolated minor to major storm periods observed at high latitudes. This period of activity was due to a recurrent coronal hole that rotated into a geoeffective position. By midday on 07 December, activity decayed to mostly quiet levels and remained so through the balance of the summary period. The period began with ACE solar wind velocities at about 290 km/s. These velocities persisted through early on 03 December when wind speed gradually increased to about 325 km/s by midday on the 03rd. Velocities continued to increase through the period and reached a maximum of 570 km/s at
07/0748 UTC. During this timeframe, the Bz component of the IMF varied from a high of +8 nT (05/1746 UTC) to a low of -8 nT (05/2128 UTC) with a Bt max of 11 nT (05/2019 UTC), all associated with the coronal hole high speed stream. The summary period ended with solar
wind velocity near 500 km/s.

Now the frequency MW 1386 kHz is used by ERA-RSM 2nd program with main freq 1044 kHz. Some of the prgrs on both freqs are relaying on 9935 kHz. Observed on Dec 2nd. Due to the political reasons[sic, ERT never on air Tuesdays due of maintenance !] Radio Filia was not on the air 0700-1000 UT in En, Fr, Sp on 12105 and in Greek on 9420 kHz on same day. BBC World Service available worldwide on Nokia mobile phones

For the first time, the BBC’s English and Arabic international news channels are now part of Nokia’s Internet Radio application on mobile phones, following an agreement between BBC World Service and Nokia. From today, three audio channels – BBC World Service in English, BBC World Service’s 24-hour rolling news in English, and BBC Arabic – will be available on the latest Nokia mobile phone models as part of their preloaded Internet Radio application. All three channels will be available for live streaming 24 hours a day.
Ruxandra Obreja, Controller, BBC World Service Business Development, said: “I believe this is an innovative agreement, getting BBC exposure on one of the latest digital platforms, giving listeners from across the globe access to our distinctive and compelling content in English and Arabic.”
Karl Kathuria, Head of Digital Delivery, BBC World Service, added: “For delivery over the Internet Radio platform, we are providing an MP3-format stream that can be picked up via Wi-Fi or through a mobile data connection, mirroring our online offer in these languages. This is the first time we’ve made our live 24-hour audio streams available specifically for a mobile platform, as part of our commitment to a multi-format strategy.”
The Nokia Internet Radio application can be downloaded to various Nokia device models for free from nokia.com/internetradio and is also preloaded in selected Nokia S60 3rd edition devices.

Canada's CHU moving to 7850 kHz

After seventy years of broadcasting Canada’s official time, NRC’s shortwave station CHU will move the transmission frequency for the 7335 KHz transmitter to 7850 KHz. The change goes into effect on 01 January 2009 at 00:00 UTC.
CHU is a part of NRC’s system for disseminating official time throughout Canada, broadcasting 24 hours a day from a location approximately 15 km south-west of downtown Ottawa. Listeners hear tones to mark the seconds, voice to announce the time in French and English, and digital data to set computers.
The atomic clocks at CHU are part of the ensemble of clocks in the time and frequency research laboratories in Ottawa, at the National Research Council Canada. The NRC clocks are used in conjunction with clocks in the time laboratories of other countries to construct the internationally accepted scale of time, UTC (Coordinated Universal Time), which is now the reference for official time used by all countries. UTC is the modern implementation of Greenwich Mean Time.
“Coincidentally, this frequency change comes at a time when NRC is investing resources to refurbish the aging transmitters at CHU in order to provide clear, dependable shortwave services as part of NRC’s mandate to disseminate time to all Canadians.” said Raymond Pelletier, Technical Officer at the NRC-Institute for National Measurement Standards, who oversees the CHU facility. “The shortwave time service is especially beneficial for those in remote locations where there is limited access to internet and telephone communication. CHU also provides a back up against failure of other services.”
In April 2007, the International Telecommunications Union re-allocated the 7300-7350 KHz band from a fixed service to a broadcasting service. Since then, interference on the 7335 KHz frequency has come from many information broadcasters around the world.
CHU listeners in Canada and around the world who have for so long considered the 7335 KHz frequency exclusively for time signals, are very vocal about this interference. We have heard from amateur radio operators, watchmakers, astronomers, and navigators who use the tones and voice signals. As well, comments were received from those who use the carrier as a calibration source at a distance for their equipment.

India Zee News ties up with Voice of America
One of the biggest public broadcasters in the US.
According to the company, Voice of America is expected to give Zee News an advantage over its competitors by providing it unprecedented access to the US market. The alliance will help Zee News in featuring stories of Indian interest from all across America.
Zee News will air a five-minute daily segment named America LIVE, which will be a part of the 8 a.m. news bulletin. In addition, Zee News will also telecast relevant stories in the afternoon (2:00 p.m.) and prime time news bulletin News Top 10.

RFE/RL protests removal from Kyrgyz airwaves
of report by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty website on 7 December Bishkek: In an indication that Kyrgyzstan’s brief experiment with pluralism may be ending, authorities in this Central Asian country confirmed on Friday that RFE/RL radio and television broadcasts have been taken off the air.
“The suspension, which began on October 8, was initially portrayed as a payment dispute, but we have since traced the payments and confirmed deposit and receipt,” said RFE/RL President Jeffrey Gedmin. “Ten weeks have passed. Our programmes remain off the air. Kyrgyz officials have refused to meet with us to resolve the situation. Frankly, we expected more from a country trying to prove its reformist credentials in the region.”
Melis Eshimkanov, director of state-owned UTRK, gave his first public acknowledgement of RFE/RL’s situation yesterday in remarks to Reuters after announcing the suspension of the BBC’s local service, also on contractual grounds. UTRK is the only nationwide Kyrgyz-language broadcaster in Kyrgyzstan, and has long aired RFE/RL radio broadcasts and prime-time television programmes.
The original suspension of RFE/RL programming coincided with local elections in Kyrgyzstan on October 5, which exposed political turmoil in the country and galvanized public criticism against President Kurmanbek Bakiyev for concentrating power.
RFE/RL’s Kyrgyz Service, known in Kyrgyzstan as Radio Azattyk, broadcasts three hours of radio programming a day and produces two weekly prime-time television news shows, “Inconvenient Questions” and the youth-oriented “Azattyk Plus”. The Service is extremely popular in Kyrgyzstan - recent surveys by Intermedia show that 40 per cent of all Kyrgyz adults either listened to Kyrgyz Service radio broadcasts or watched its television shows at least once a week.
