From Bill Tilford we have news of a special NYE Spectacular on R Angela (via WBCQ) which will be a two-hour program on 1st January from 0300-0500UT on 5130 kHz. This will replace the scheduled Ginga Brasil! and Uncle Bill's Melting Pot at this time.
Over a dozen Radio Angela hosts and special guests are participating to bring you music, poetry, laughs, special greetings, and other surprises. Unlike past multiprogram WBCQ specials, this broadcast will be exclusive to 5130 kHz.
This sounds fun, and these two hours should complement the earlier two-hour TRSW broadcast
to provide a great four hours of enjoyable listening - accompanied by your favorite beverage!

-Kaliningrad Radio Center #5 has prepared a second transmitter and a new frequency for on-air tests: 549 kHz. A few days earlier, short turns were made to test the operability of the restored antenna and the transmitting complex. Tests are carried out with reduced power, at the level of 50-70 kW. The antenna is involved – a mast with a height of 257 meters, previously used in the long wave band (171 kHz)
There are no airing schedules for 549 kHz. Test broadcasting can be carried out on weekdays during business hours (9-17 Moscow time)
Such a conditional schedule is also valid for a frequency of 1143 kHz.

I hope you have been enjoying the holiday season. Best wishes for the new year. Bear with me if I type "2022" a few times when I should type 2023.
And if you were affected by Winter Storm Elliott (where did they get that name?), I hope the recovery is going well.
Last weekend the Sunday 2330 UTC show was missing. Jeff White informed me that WRMI's 7570 kHz transmitter "blew a 4CX3000 tube when it was turned on just before 2300 [UTC]" The cold weather which reached Florida caused problems at WRMI. Cold weather does not usually hurt tubes, but power fluctuations caused by Florida's idea of cold weather do cause some tubes to blow.
That 7570 kHz transmission is scheduled to switch to Saturday 2300-2330 UTC this weekend. This will avoid a conflict between Shortwave Radiogram and The Mighty KBC, which moves to Sunday 2200-2400 UTC on 5950 kHz from WRMI, starting January 1.
A video of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 284) is provided by Scott in Ontario (Friday 1300 UTC) -- it's a chance to decode the "Holiday Spectacular" if you missed it. The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. The analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

Radio Angela Special Announcement
Due to WBCQ's transmitter outage on 7490 kHz, for the next several nights, Radio Angela will be sharing 5130 kHz with several of the programs normally heard on 7490 kHz. Most nights, those programs will all air prior to our 10pm EST start, and our shows will be unaffected.
One notable exception is that Thursdays 0300-0400 EST (Wednesdays 10pm-11pm), the second hour of a talk show from 7490 kHz will displace the first hour of our Radio Angela broadcast. Tonight, therefore, Randy Holt's Radio New Music will air at 0400 UTC (11 PM EST tonight), an hour later than usual.
This is a temporary situation until the transmitter for 7490 kHz can be repaired. 7490 kHz carries a very different format than Radio Angela, and these will be separated again when circumstances permit.

History of Bulgaria's Vakarel transmitting station
From the script of AWR "Wavescan" DX Program
On this occasion here in Wavescan today, we present the story of the huge radio broadcasting station that was erected at Vakarel back in the era before the beginning of World War II. Vakarel is a small town with a population of less than 2,000, some 25 miles southeast of the national capital Sofia.
Both the major national highway system and the electrified railway system run through the Vakarel area. A major highlight in the area was the tall radio tower that was erected a mile distant from the village of Vakarel some 85 years ago.
It was on Wednesday 13 October 1937, that the huge new radio broadcasting station was officially dedicated at Vakarel, with the intent of gaining nationwide coverage on mediumwave and longwave from one location. Test broadcasts from the new Telefunken transmitter began six weeks later, on 17 November with 100 kW on 850 kHz.
At the time of construction by Telefunken, the Blaw-Knox radio tower stood at 1160 feet (though some authorities say 705 feet) and for a long period of time, it was the second tallest man-made structure in the world and the tallest in Europe. It was a tourist wonder in that area of forests and undulating hills.
At the time of its demolition, the Vakarel radio tower was still the tallest in Bulgaria. The famous (or as some radio engineers would suggest, infamous) Blaw-Knox diamond-shaped tower near Vakarel was one of four such towers in Europe.
Back in 1937, two-directional antenna systems were erected at Vakarel for use on longwave and mediumwave, though little use was ever made of its longwave capability. One antenna system was made up of three towers, each guyed, and the other system consisted of two towers.
The mediumwave channel initially was 850 kHz, with a power of 100 kW.
During World War II, the 100 kW transmitter was operated at half power, 50 kW, due to the unavailability of spare parts, though still on the same mediumwave channel 850 kHz.
When circumstances in Europe began to settle down after the end of World War II, the power level at the mediumwave transmitter was again restored to its 100 kW capacity. At the same time, the operational frequency was changed to fit in with the mediumwave channel patterns in Europe, and the original 850 kHz channel was modified in favor of the new 827 kHz.
However, when the pattern for mediumwave frequency usage was modified to 9 kHz intervals in Europe in 1978, the Vakarel transmitter was adjusted from 827 kHz to 828 kHz. Back at that era, radio Sofia was on the air via Vakarel with news bulletins in 15 different European languages, including Esperanto.
During the year 1990, a new high-powered 500 kW mediumwave station at Shunem, in the northeast of Bulgaria, was activated on the same channel as Vakarel, 828 kHz. However, the program feed for both transmitters was the same, in the languages of the surrounding countries. At the same time, the power level at Vakarel was reduced from 100 kW to 50 kW.
But changes were on the horizon. The German-made Telefunken transmitter at Vakarel was aging, and a whole nationwide network of FM stations was taking over the radio scene throughout Bulgaria. Both Vakarel and Shunem were inactive in 2011, and finally, the historic Vakarel transmitter was silenced forever three years later, on 31 December 2014.
The three-quarter century-old Blaw-Knox tower stood tall and strong for another six years, as no more than an old tourist attraction. Then two years ago in 2020, a special event amateur station LZ0AA was licensed to transmit 80 meters from the Vakarel Tower, as the final episode of events from this historic landmark.
That was the end. On 16 September 2020, that tower with its 130 tons of steel was dropped.
Gone was the old historic German transmitter, and likewise the old German tower, both of which performed so remarkably well during their 85-year history of mediumwave radio broadcasting. However as a matter of interest, you can search for Vakarel Radio Tower on Google Earth, and there you will see the tower still standing, together with its lengthy shadow.

Japan Shortwave Club (JSWC) will broadcast 30 minutes year-end program Shortwave World in 2022 in Japanese by the club members -Toshimichi Ohtake and Takahito Akabayashi, over HCJB Japanese of Reach Beyond Australia (from Kununurra 75 kW 5 deg azimuth).
December 30 at 2230-2300 UT on 15420 kHz, repeated December 31 at 1100-1130 UT on 11905 kHz.
This is the last chance to get JSWC's 70th-anniversary special eQSL. Reception reports should be addressed to jswc70qsl@gmail.com

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 19 - 25 December 2022
Solar activity reached moderate levels on 20 Dec. Region 3169 (N19, L=116, class/area=Dho/290 on 21 Dec) produced an M1/Sf at 20/1406 UTC which was the largest event of the period. Low levels of solar activity and C-class flare activity were observed throughout the remainder of the period. A CME from 24 Dec was determined to have an Earth-directed component and is expected to arrive on 27 Dec. No other Earth-directed CMEs were detected this period.
No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels on 24-25 Dec, and normal to moderate levels were observed on 17-23 Dec.
Geomagnetic field activity reached minor storm levels on 23 Dec, and active levels on 19, 22, and 24 Dec, all due to CH HSS influences. Quiet to unsettled field activity was observed throughout the remainder of the period.
Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 26 December - 21 January 2023
Solar activity is expected to be low throughout the period with a slight chance for M-class flare activity.
No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 26 Dec-03 Jan, and 20-21 Jan. Normal to moderate levels are expected to persist throughout the remainder of the period.
Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach minor storm levels on 27 Dec due to the anticipated arrival of a CME from 24 Dec in addition to positive polarity CH HSS influences. Minor storms are expected again on 03 Jan and 19-20 Jan due to the influences of multiple recurrent CH HSSs. Active conditions are expected on 28, 30-31 Dec and 04, 18 Jan. Quiet and quiet to unsettled activity are expected to persist throughout the remainder of the period.

Christmas Eve DX Test for WCGA
The Courtesy Program Committee (CPC) of the National Radio Club and International Radio Club of America is pleased to announce a Christmas Eve DX Test for WCGA 1100 in Woodbine, Georgia.
Station owner Wesley Cox explained, “WCGA is a daytime-only station that broadcasts a news/talk format to the Georgia coast at 10,000 watts. We sign off at sundown to protect WTAM in Cleveland, Ohio. But we need to do some maintenance on our Harris DX-10 transmitter and the audio chain, so we thought, let’s do it on Christmas Eve.”
The station will broadcast test tones, Morse Code identifications, long-duration 1 kHz test tones, and Christmas music produced using a modular synthesizer. The testing will begin at 12:01 AM Eastern Time (05:01 UTC) on Saturday morning, December 24th.
The test can be received at great distances, perhaps even in Europe and Scandanavia. Cox welcomes reception reports from faraway listeners, “We’re especially interested in hearing reports about the audio coming from the station, noting any distortion or modulation issues.”
Listeners who hear the test are asked to submit reception reports to the CPC, who will handle the station’s reception reports. Please follow the requirements below:

Reception reports must be received within the next 30 days. The use of remote SDRs to receive the test is discouraged unless it is a receiver location that you have built and maintained specifically for DXing. If a remote SDR is used, you must disclose the location of the receiver and the name of the owner, if known. The remote receiver must be located at least 500 miles from WCGA.

Farewell to RTL
Reminder: From January 1st, RTL will no longer broadcast its LW signal (234 kHz) from its transmitter in Beidweiler, Luxembourg. It should lower by some 6000 MWh electricity consumption per year. "Adieu, RTL en Grandes Ondes"(Alps DX)
Their longwave station broadcast in French and will sign-off on December 31, 2022.

The broadcast last year was reduced to three hours (with the Christmas Mass being cut from the broadcast) and further suffered a couple of technical issues, so we hope that this year’s broadcast will be trouble-free.
The Broadcast will run 3-4 hrs in period 1800-2300 on 24 December.

The Mighty KBC is slated for December 25 broadcast
On Christmas Day, The Mighty KBC will broadcast their final program on 5960 kHz via Nauen, Germany, at 0000-0200 UTC.
From January 1, 2023, The Mighty KBC will be using the facilities of WRMI in Okeechobee, Florida. The Mighty KBC is on the air each Sunday via WRMI, 2200-0000 UTC on 5950 kHz for the winter period.

Important Update: Covid-19 stops SAQ on Christmas Eve morning
SAQ will not air this Christmas.
Important update!
Covid-19 is currently, again, spreading around the world, also to Sweden and to Grimeton.
Due to Covid-19 infection in the Alexander team, SAQ will not be able to air on Christmas Eve morning, Dec 24th, 2022. No one is seriously ill, only mild symptoms, however, we can not put anyone in the team at risk.
For that same reason, the radio station will be closed for visitors and SK6SAQ will not be QRV, on that same day.
We feel very sorry for this and ask for everyone’s understanding.
