Radio Malaysia reaches broadcasting milestone

 


Radio Malaysia has been broadcasting for an amazing 75 years. Special thanks to AWR Wavescan for their in-depth feature on this station.

Radio Malaysia celebrated its 75th anniversary on April 1 (2021). It was in 1946 when the world was emerging from the concentrated and tragic events of a world at war into a somewhat unsteady peace that the new Radio Malaya was formed.  At that time, Singapore was the capital city for the Malayan states.

The first licensed radio broadcasting station in British Malaya was ZHI which was owned and operated by the Radio Service Company at 4 Orchard Road in Singapore.  That radio station was installed in the upper floor of the shophouse next door, at 2 Orchard Road. Test transmissions from this new and licensed broadcasting station began on May 3, 1933, and it was first noted in Australia 6 months later in early November (1933).  This station ZHI operated on a 6060 kHz shortwave with a power of 180 watts and it was on the air four days a week, (Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday) for 2½  hours on each occasion.

However soon afterward, the local government began to set in operation an alternative system for the operation of a radio broadcasting network throughout Malaya, and this was based upon the BBC set up in the home country: That is, not a system of commercially operated independent stations as in the United States, instead of a government-controlled nationwide network of radio broadcasting stations.

Thus on July 21, 1935, the new British Malaya Broadcasting Corporation (BMBC) was formed, and plans were announced for the construction and installation of a combined mediumwave and shortwave radio station at Caldecott Hill.  Back then, that location on Thomson Road was an isolated site out beyond the furthest edge of Singapore City.

In the meantime, a temporary fill-in broadcasting station was installed in the imposing new Empress Place Building in the central area of Singapore city.  That new station, which was inaugurated in June 1936, was licensed under another internationally recognized callsign ZHL, and it operated with 2 kW on 1332 kHz.   

In anticipation of the new BMBC radio stations, the government canceled the license of the commercial station ZHI at the radio shop on Orchard Road, effective at the end of the year 1936. During the overlapping 6 month period running from July to the end of December (1936) when both stations were on the air together (the commercial shortwave ZHI and the government mediumwave ZHL), they both carried the same programming.

The imposing new radio broadcasting station at Caldecott Hill, together with its offices, studios, transmitters, tall tower, and temporary accommodations, was officially opened by His Excellency the Governor Sir Shenton Thomas on Monday, March 1, 1937.  The equipment at Caldecott Hill included 4 new shortwave transmitters at 500 watts each, and these were allocated the collective callsigns ZHP and ZHN.  

Under the callsigns, ZHP1 through ZHP4, each of these four transmitters operated on its own set frequency with program broadcasting.  Under the callsigns, ZHN1 through ZHN4 these transmitters were generally in use for program relays and information transmissions to other areas of Malaya and beyond.  However this scheduled planning was not always consistent, and sometimes a ZHN callsign was noted with programming in parallel with a ZHP callsign.  

The original 100-watt commercial shortwave transmitter ZHI was removed from Orchard Road and re-installed at Caldecott Hill under a new callsign ZHO.  The 2 kW BMBC mediumwave transmitter ZHL on 1332 kHz was removed from the Empress Place Building and it was reinstalled under the same callsign ZHL at Caldecott Hill, together with a new tower standing at 200 ft tall. 

However, because the Caldecott studios were too far out from downtown Singapore and public transport was not readily available, a set of production and on-air studios was installed in the very new Cathay Building at 2 Handy Road in Singapore city.  One of the main announcers for BMBC Singapore in the Cathay Building back then was Captain James Mudie.  He had previously served with the BBC in London, and he was in Singapore with the Royal Corp of Signals.  

With hostilities bristling on the horizon in both Europe and Asia, the British government bought the BMBC station at Caldecott Hill, and they also began the construction of a large new shortwave station at Jurong, still further away from the city than the Caldecott Hill station.  It was intended that the new Jurong station would act as a relay station on behalf of the BBC in London.

Work commenced on the Jurong station in 1939, with the construction of a transmitter building and the installation of the needed antenna systems.  A 100 kW Marconi shortwave transmitter was shipped out from England, but the ship was torpedoed on the way and sunk, and the electronic equipment was lost.

As a replacement, the BBC obtained a 50 kW RCA shortwave transmitter from the United States and this was despatched to Singapore by ship for installation at the new station already under construction at Jurong.  The transmitter equipment was partially installed at Jurong though the power transformers were compatible with the American electrical system, not with the Singapore electrical system. 

 However, before work was completed on the entire facility at Jurong, the transmitter was hurriedly removed due to the outbreak of war in the Pacific.  It was then shipped to Barbados in the Caribbean where it was installed at the C&W Cable and Wireless communication station at Bearded Hall, under the callsign VPO.  

The Japanese began their invasion of Singapore island during Sunday evening February 8, 1942.  A few weeks later, they were on the air from the Singapore radio station under the new slogan, Shonan Radio.

Radio Facility in India Turned into a Jail

 It was on August 5, 2020, that All India Radio in Almora in the northern Indian border state of Uttarakhand announced that local police officials had temporarily taken over some of the staff accommodation at the Akashvani center in Almora.  The police stated that they needed accommodation for new jail inmates in order to minimize the spread of the China Virus. 


All India Radio in Almora is located on Almora Road Khatyari and the campus contains the radio station as well as staff accommodations. The police authorities took over some of the accommodation on this campus in spite of objections raised by the local management of All India Radio (AIR).

The presence of prisoners in the AIR staff quarters at Almora presented problems for AIR staff personnel, they stated, including the women and children who expressed concern for their well-being.  The police authorities indicated that their usage of the AIR accommodations would be temporary only until the virus situation is resolved in the Almora area. 
Almora with its 35,000 population is a small city located against the Himalaya foothills towards the south of the state Uttarakhand, which is nestled against China to the north and Nepal to the southeast.  Because of its mountainous elevation at a little over 5,000 feet, Almora enjoys a mild climate. 

The AIR mediumwave station in Almora was the second mediumwave station in the territory of the state of Uttarakhand and it was inaugurated with 1 kW on 999 kHz in June 1986.  Half a dozen years ago, AIR headquarters in New Delhi announced their intent to increase the power of their Almora station to 5 kW in order to increase its coverage areas in the mountainous regions of the state.  However instead, the number of local FM relay stations was considerably increased.  

The state of Uttarakhand as it is known today was carved out of the larger Uttar Pradesh and formed into a separate state on November 9, 2000, under the name Uttaranchal.  Due to public clamor, the state name was changed to the now more familiar Uttarakhand on January 1, 2007.

The first radio station in this territory, a pioneer endeavor, was inaugurated in Dehra Dun on April 6, 1936, with 250 watts on 225 meters (1333 kHz) under the callsign VUU.  This pioneer radio broadcasting station was established and operated under the authority of the Political Superintendent of the area.  However, due to lack of funding, this station was closed two years later on May 10 (1938).

Nearby to Dehra Dun was a very large prisoner of war camp operated by the British for holding enemy aliens who were resident in India and several nearby countries when hostilities broke out in Europe and Asia in the middle of last century.  One of the famous prisoners in that internment camp was the Austrian mountaineer, Heinrich Harrer.  He escaped from the internment camp, traversed the high snow-covered mountainous areas, and went on into Tibet where he became a tutor and friend to the new young Dalai Lama.

In the Himalayan foothills above Dehra Dun is Mussoorie, a British hill station, with its internationally recognized Christian school Woodstock.  Nearby is Vincent Hill, which was a boarding school for the children of Adventist missionaries throughout India.  This school was closed in 1969 and sold after denominational leadership was gradually transferred over to Indian leadership.  The large Vincent Hill property was sold to a Sikh religious order and they now operate their own FM radio station at this location, Radio Khushi 90.4 MHz.   

The first radio broadcasting station for coverage of what is now Uttarakhand in our modern era was established at Najibabad a little less than half a century ago.  This AIR station began at a power level of 100 kW on  954 kHz, though these days it operates at 200 kW.  Najibabad is located almost on the state border with Uttarakhand, and the radio station provides good coverage to most of the state.  

At the time when Uttarakhand was proclaimed a separate state as Uttaranchal in 2000, a new shortwave service was inaugurated for the new state.  All India Radio Delhi carried a program relay from the mediumwave station at Najibabad with 50 kW on 6030 kHz.
Meanwhile, new mediumwave stations were under construction at four different locations, in addition to the aforementioned Almora on 999 kHz.  Each of these new stations was rated at 1 kW, and each operated on a fixed channel either 1485 kHz or 1602 kHz.  These four new AIR mediumwave stations are located at Chamoli, Pauri, Pithorgarh and Uttarkashi.

One change to our transmission schedule take effect this weekend: The Saturday (Friday in the Americas) broadcast at 0000-0030 UTC on 9955 kHz is no longer available. We hope we can return to 9955 in the future, because this frequency provided coverage from South America to northern Canada.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 24 - 30 May 2021

Solar activity was at very low levels on 24-25 and 30 May while an increase to low levels occurred on 26-29 May. The majority of the flare activity was from Regions 2824 (N20, L=196, class/area Dho/250 on 27 May) and 2826 (N24, L=215, class/area Dko/280 on 27 May). 

The largest flare of the period was a C9/1f at 28/2313 UTC from Region 2824. Associated with this flare were Type II and Type IV radio sweeps along with a CME observed off the west limb in the SOHO/LASCO C2 imagery beginning at the 28/2312 UTC. WSA/ENLIL modeling of the CME showed the bulk of the plasma directed off the Sun-Earth line, however, there was potential for a glancing blow late on 01 Jun to early on 02 Jun. 

A greater than 10 MeV proton event (S1-Minor) began at 29/0300 UTC, reached a peak flux of 15 pfu at 29/0320 UTC, and ended at 29/0540 UTC associated with the aforementioned C9 flare on 28 May. 

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels on 24-26 May and decreased to normal-moderate levels on 27-30 May. The largest flux of the period was 1,530 pfu being observed at 25/1825 UTC. 

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels. The period began with nominal solar wind conditions and quiet levels through early on 26 May. At 26/1148 UTC an impulsive increase in solar wind speed from approximately 300-350 km/s was observed with then a simultaneous increase in the total field from 3-8 nT, marking the arrival of a possible conglomeration of CMEs from 22-23 May.  

Total field continued to increase to 16 nT through early on 27 May while solar wind speed increased to 400-450 km/s. The geomagnetic field responded with unsettled to G1 (Minor) storm levels in the second half on 26 May, followed by quiet to active levels on 27 May. Solar wind speed continued between 380-490 km/s through the end of the period. Quiet conditions were once again observed on 28 May followed by quiet to unsettled levels on 29-30 May. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 31 May - 26 June 2021

Solar activity is expected to be at very low to low levels on 31 May - 11 Jun and again on 26 Jun. A slight chance for moderate (R1-Minor) flares exists on 12-25 Jun with the return of Region 2824 to the visible disk. 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 18-22 Jun due to coronal hole high-speed stream (CH HSS) influence. 

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach unsettled to active levels on 01-04 Jun due to a combination of CH HSS effects as well as the potential for a glancing blow from the 28 May CME late on 01 Jun to early on 02 Jun. Unsettled to active levels are expected again on 16-17 Jun, with G1 (Minor) storm levels likely on 16 Jun due to recurrent CH HSS effects. Unsettled levels are likely to be on 26 Jun due to a possible reoccurring solar sector boundary crossing (SSBC).

KTWR's DXers Diary program reminder

Shortwave radiogram schedules, Saturday-Sunday

 

Hello friends

This weekend we will finally transmit a photo of a cicada. The present brood of the 17-year cicadas, and their wonderful sound, won't be around much longer. And I probably won't be around for their next appearance, so I am enjoying the critters as much as I can.

Speaking of things that are going away, this weekend will be the last transmission of Shortwave Radiogram on WRMI's 9955 kHz, Saturday 0000-0030 UTC (Friday evening in the Americas). WRMI has a new show for that slot. The 9955 kHz frequency was great while it lasted, reaching from South America (its nominal target) to upper Alberta, and sometimes Europe.

A video of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 205) is provided by Scott in Ontario (Friday 1300 UTC). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. The analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

This week's program (first transmission on Saturday by Channel 292) starts with some ballet music from Poulenc, some incidental music from Fauré, and a modern hymn to the Titanic by Gavin Bryars.
After that Theme from Paul Hindemith's The Four Temperaments, some more Gavin Bryars, and a sonata for recorder and basso continuo composed by eighteenth-century Neapolitan Francesco Mancini.
The last section of the programme has two modern pieces by contemporary acoustic ensembles and finishes with part of Schubert's String Quartet No. 13.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 17 - 23 May 2021

Solar activity ranged from very low to moderate levels with the majority of the flare activity caused by Region 2824 (N21, L=195, class/area Csi/190 on 22 May). Very low levels were observed on 17 and 19-20 May with Low levels occurring on 18 and 21 May. Activity increased to moderate levels on 22-23 May due to a series of M1 flares from Region 2824 at 22/1711, 22/2136, and 23/1108 UTC. And in addition to the M-class flares were several noteworthy C-class flares, including an impulsive C6/1n at 22/0256 UTC with an associated Type II (1530 km/s) Radio sweep, an impulsive C6/1n with an associated Type II (653 km/s), and a long duration C1 at 22/0844 UTC. Multiple CME signatures were observed from the region associated with these flares (and others). Each was modelled and put into a consolidated WSA-ENLIL run showing arrival times beginning late on 25 May. 

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels with a peak flux of 1,040 pfu which was briefly reached at 22/1635 UTC. 

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels. The period began with nominal solar wind values in the 325-420 km/s range through early on 20 May. An isolated active period was observed early on 18 May due to possible weak CME influence from 13 May. The geomagnetic field was quiet on 17 May, quiet to active on 18 May, and quiet to be unsettled on 19 May.

Beginning at 20/1845 UTC, the total field increased to 19 nT while solar wind speed subsequently were increased to near 575 km/s due to the onset of a negative polarity coronal hole high-speed stream (CH HSS). Solar wind speed slowly decreased back to nominal levels by the end of the period. The geomagnetic field responded with quiet to G1 (Minor) storm levels on 20 May, quiet to unsettled on 21 May, and quiet levels thereafter. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 24 May - 19 June 2021

Solar activity is expected to be low with a chance for further M-class flares on 24-30 May as Region 2824 rotates across the visible disk. Very low levels are expected on 31 May - 11 Jun. Low levels are expected to return on 12-19 Jun as Region 2824 rotates back onto the visible disk. 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 26-29 May due to CME enhancements. 

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach G1 (Minor) storm levels on 25-27 May with G2 (Moderate) storming on 26 May due to the arrival of multiple CMEs from 22-23 May. G1 (Minor) storming is also likely on 16 Jun as a recurrent, negative polarity CH HSS is expected to become geoeffective.

Straits Voice Broadcasting Station announces temporary shutdown


Due to the maintenance and debugging of launching station equipment, Straits Voice Broadcasting Station news broadcast shortwave 4940kHz, Hokkien dialect broadcast shortwave 4900kHz will be suspended from May 16 to July 13, 2021, July 14. Airing resumed on the same day.

During the short-wave shutdown and maintenance period, news broadcasts were broadcast at medium wave 666kHz and Fuzhou area FM 90.6MHz; Hokkien dialect broadcasts at 783kHz medium wave and Xiamen area FM 97.9MHz were broadcast normally.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 10 - 16 May 2021

Solar activity was very low on 10-11, 13-16 May. Low levels were observed on 12 May due to an isolated C1/Sf flare from Region 2822 at 12/0935 UTC. Region 2822 (N18, L=335, class/area=Dao/190 on 12 May) was the most complex and active region this period, and was the source of an Earth-directed CME observed on 09 May, which arrived at Earth on 12 May. Coronal dimming in the vicinity of Region 2822 on 13 May was associated with another Earth-directed CME which is anticipated to arrive at Earth on 18 May. Region 2823 (S22, L=329, class/area=Cso/40 on 12 May) was quiet throughout the period. 

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was normal to moderate throughout the period. 

Geomagnetic field activity reached G3 (strong) geomagnetic storm levels between 1200-1800 UTC on 12 May due to effects from the 09 May CME. Quiet to unsettled conditions were observed on 15 May, and quiet conditions were observed throughout the remainder of the week. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 17 May - 12 June 2021

Solar activity is expected to be very low to low throughout the outlook period. 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 19-24 May. Normal to moderate flux levels are expected to persist throughout the remainder of the period. 

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach active levels on 17 May due to negative polarity CH HSS influence. Active conditions to G1 (Minor) storm levels are expected on 18 May due to continued CH HSS influence and the effects of the 13 May CME. Active conditions are expected on 19 May due to diminishing CH HSS influence and CME effects. Predominately quiet and quiet to unsettled conditions are expected to prevail throughout the remainder of the outlook period.

Shortwave Radiogram, weekend schedules

Shortwave Radiogram received some publicity on the May 7th edition of Amateur Radio Newsline. The audio and text are available here and the video version here. Thanks to Benn Kobb, AK4AV, for presenting the report.

Videos of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 203) are provided by Scott in Ontario (Friday 1300 UTC), Frigid in Virginia (Saturday 1330 UTC), and kurma10goo in Japan (the MFSK32 segment Sunday 0800 UTC on 5850 kHz). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. Analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

This weekend we will again demonstrate text transmission in a language other than English. It will be Spanish, so less complex (to our eyes) than the Khmer and Burmese we tried a few weeks ago. But there are diacritics (accent marks). These require the UTF-8 character set, which is default in Fldigi and TIVAR. If for some reason the diacritics do not display correctly, copy what you do decode in the Fldigi receive pane to a word process, and they might be correct there. ¿No hablas español? New York and Pennsylvania NBEMS nets. Most weekends, as KD9XB, I check in to the New York NBEMS (Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Software) net Saturday at 1200 UTC on 3584 kHz USB, and the Pennsylvania NBEMS net Sunday at 1130 UTC on 3583 kHz USB. Check-ins are usually in Thor 22, and messages are in MFSK32. Messages generally use the Flmsg add-on to Fldigi. 

If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check-in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check-in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg. If you can decode the net, send me an email to radiogram@verizon.net, or tweet to @SWRadiogram, and I will let them know you are tuned in. 76 Years since Battle for Czech Radio sparked Prague uprising

 

May 5 marks the 76th anniversary of the beginning of the Battle for Czech Radio which is traditionally seen as the start of the Prague Uprising that led to the city being liberated from German control after four days of hard fighting in the closing phase of World War Two in Europe.

At the beginning of May 1945 the supposedly 1,000 year Third Reich was in its last spasms. Adolf Hitler had already shot himself and much of Germany was overrun by the Allies. However, there was still a large army group stationed in Bohemia fighting the Americans advancing into Bohemian territory from the West and the Soviets who were coming from the East. Prague was still occupied by the Germans.
