As War Rages, Syrians Find Hope on Radio

The Syrian people are plunged in civil war, and you’re hearing about it daily as bombing strikes are contemplated in retaliation for chemical weapons attacks on civilians.

Now a radio program launched this summer is providing a forum for Christians and non-Christians to tell their stories amid the violence and deprivation. They are offering and receiving advice and encouragement on the TWR broadcast of Hope for Syria.

Much like Joseph told his brothers as they groveled before him in ancient Egypt, God can bring good out of these circumstances despite the obvious horrors inherent in the bitter war and religious strife. Through Hope in Syria, says TWR’s Arabic Ministry director, “the Lord strengthens the faith of those who are experiencing hunger and seeing their kids suffer.”

Amateur Radio Special Event Calendar

September 10-14
Portugal
CR5150, (Special Event). Members of the Portuguese Navy Hamradio Club (NRA) will activate the special event station CR5150NM between September 10-14th. Activity is to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Portuguese Navy Museum since it was founded by the King D. Luis I. Activity will be on all HF bands except 10 MHz using CW, SSB and eventualy PSK. A special QSL card is being produced, and it will be issued and sent to all contacted stations. Stations should send their QSL card by the Bureau (ARRL) or direct to CS5NRA.

September 10-19
Panama
HP0, (IOTA Tour Reminder). Operators Christian/EA3NT, Raul/EA5KA, Vincent/F4BKV and Col/MM0NDX, from the Invoker Team, have started their activation of six Panamanian island groups as HP0INT(/1,2,3,4 or 9) between September 10-19th. Activity will be on 40-10 meters using CW and SSB. The team tentative schedule is as follows:
  September  10-11 - Ogobsibu (San Blas) Island (NA-170); callsign HP0INT/2
  September 11-13 - Grande Island (NA-202); callsign HP0INT/2
  September 13-15 - Iguana Island (NA-203); callsign HP0INT/9
  September 16-18 - Colon [Bocas del Toro] (NA-088); callsign HP0INT/4

  Please be careful with HP0INT/2 as it will be used from two different IOTA groups. Listen carefully to the operator to know the exact location/IOTA. Direct QSLs are via F4BKV (OQRS preferred) [if you use IRC, he only accepts the new model valid until 2017]. Bureau QSLs are via F5CWU (OQRS preferred). September 10-21
EU-038. Tonnie, PA9CW, is now active as PA9CW/P from Texel Island (WLOTA 0043) until September 21. Activity will be on 30 meters CW (his preferred mode) and sometimes PSK or RTTY. QSL via PA9CW, by the Bureau or direct.

September 12-24
EU-067. Marek, SP5ISZ, will be active as SV8/SP5ISZ from Milos Island  (GIOTA SAS-089, MIA MG-072, WLOTA 4149) September 12-24. Activity will be holiday style on the HF bands, depending on the     propagation. QSL via his home callsign, by the Bureau  direct, eQSL or LoTW.

September 13-18
St. Maarten
PJ7, Dave, AH6HY, will once again be active as PJ7/AH6HY from St. Martin Island (NA-105) between September 13-18. Activity will be holiday style primarily during his evenings and on 20/17/15 meters but SSB only.  QSL via AH6HY, direct or by the Bureau.

September 14-19
Liechtenstein
HB0, Joannes, DF5AU, will be active as HB0/DF5AU between September 14-19. Activity will be on the HF bands with a focus on the higher bands using a beam antenna and amp, operating CW and SSB. QSL via DF5AU, by the DARC Bureau, direct or LoTW.

September 20-October 15
Fiji & Rotuma Islands
3D2 & 3D2/R, (Update to OPDX.1118). Andy, LZ2HM, has joined the team of Stan/LZ1GC and Rocky/3D2DD to be active from Fiji and Rotuma. Their schedule is as follows:

September 20-26 - Stan will be active as 3D2GC from the "Club Fiji Resort", Nadi, Fiji Republic, Viti Levu Island. (OC-016, WW. Loc. RH82QF). Activity will be on 160-6 meters using CW and SSB, with the following equipment: Kenwood TS-480 SAT + linear amplifier ACOM 1010/ACOM 1000. The antennas: EXP. GP 40-10m,  80/160 meters INV-L and GP.
September 27-October 11-Callsigns 3D2RA (Andy), 3D2GC/P and 3D2DD/P; from Rotuma Island (OC-060). Activity will be on all HF bands. Stan 3D2GC/P will active on all HF bands, CW/SSB together with Andy, 3D2RA and Rocky, 3D2DD. Rocky will also be active, but only on SSB with the callsign 3D2DD/P. Andy, 3D2RA, will be active on all HF bands, 160-2 meters CW/SSB/DIGITAL (PSK & SSTV) and special attention will be made to work by EME on 50 MHz on JT65A.
October   12-15th - Callsign 3D2GC again from Fiji Republic. On October 16, Stan, LZ1GC, will go back to Bulgaria.

September 28-November 2
Reunion Island
FR, Willi, DJ7RJ, will be active as FR/DJ7RJ from Reunion Island (AF-016). Activity will be on 160-10 meters using CW and SSB. He prefers lowbands. Willi will use a K2 with a SS-Amp 500w into a INV-L 15m (49 ft) vertical and 12m (39ft) horizontal with 2-4 elevated radials each 20m (66ft) long. QSL

Crisis in Syria - Monitoring Syrian Domestic Broadcast

As the crisis in Syria deepens and attacks by western military forces are imminent we turn our attention to monitoring domestic broadcast services from and to Syria.

Radio Damascus has been off of shortwave several years now but during a crisis you never know. Their old transmitters or frequency assignments may pop back up at anytime. Radio Damascus last transmitted on shortwave on 9330 kHz / 31 meter band and 12085 kHz / 25 meter band.

Radio Damascus is still on medium wave at 783 kHz for those in the region with AM monitor capability.

You can also monitor Radio Damascus daily broadcast podcast at  http://www.radio-damascus.net/.  The daily program is posted one day after the live transmission so you can always download on the above mentioned page the program of the former day.

If you have C/Ku-band satellite reception capability you can monitor Radio Damascus via this method.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 02 - 08 September 2013

Solar activity was at very low to low levels. Very low levels were observed on 02 September. Activity increased to low levels on 03 September with a single C1/Sf flare at 03/1747 UTC from Region 1834 (N12, L=021, class/area Dai/090 on 02 September). 04 September saw 8 C-class events, the largest a C3/Sf at 04/0431 UTC from Region 1837 (S16, L=352, class/area Dsi/130 on 05 September). A pair of C-class flares were observed on 05 September, the largest a C1/Sf at 05/1955 UTC from Region 1836 (N11, L=339 class/area Cao/180 on 30 August). Low levels continued on 06 September with a C1 x-ray event from an unnumbered region beyond the NE limb. The period closed out on 07 - 08 September with very low levels. No Earth-directed coronal mass ejections (CMEs) were observed during the summary period. 

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at moderate to high levels through the summary period. 

Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet to unsettled levels. 02 - 03 September observed quiet to unsettled levels due to residual coronal hole high speed stream (CH HSS) effects combined with weak effects from the 30 August CME. The remainder of the period saw quiet levels with an isolated unsettled period early on 08 September. Solar wind began the period on 02 September at about 525 km/s, declined in speed to near 350 km/s by early on 03 September and varied between 350 km/s to 500 km/s through the remainder of the period. Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bt varied between 3 to 9 nT while the Bz component of the IMF did not vary much beyond +7/-5 nT. Phi angle was in a predominately negative (towards) orientation for a majority of the period with positive (away) orientation on 02 September and again on 08 September. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 09 September - 05 October 2013

Solar activity is expected to be very low to low levels.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be moderate to high levels on 12 - 16 September, 19 - 23 September and 29 September - 05 October due to activity associated with CH HSSs. Normal to moderate levels are expected for the remainder of the period. 

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at quiet to unsettled levels on 09 - 13 September with isolated active periods on 09 and 12 September due to CH HSS effects. Mostly quiet conditions are expected on 14 - 16 September. Quiet to active conditions are expected from 17 - 20 September, quiet to unsettled conditions from 23 - 24 September and quiet to active conditions on 26 - 29
September due to CH HSS effects. Mostly quiet conditions are expected for the remaining periods.

Adventist World Radio Receives Upgrades

Upgrades to the local Adventist World Radio station in Agat now allow the church to better broadcast its messages to the islands of the Pacific and to Asia.

Ted Wilson, President of the Seventh-day Adventist church, said the $2.9 million upgrade included the addition of a new curtain, supported by existing towers, which increased the efficiency of the entire facility by 20 to 25 percent.

"There are literally millions of people that tune into this," Wilson said.

DXpeditions Hunt Elusive Radio Signals

MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay — Uruguay’s Horacio Nigro is an amateur radio operator (call sign CX3BZ), an international shortwave radio listener/blogger , and an avid fan of “DXpeditions.”

Either alone or accompanied by other radio enthusiasts, DXpeditions are journeys to sparsely populated, low-interference zones — requiring supplies such as high-end radio equipment and long wire antennas. As for the expression “DXpedition,” DX is an old Morse Code term for the word “distance,” and a “DXer” is the radio hobbyist who seeks distant radio signals. “I started my own saga of personal DXpeditions going to Valizas, a seaside village in the Atlantic coast of Uruguay, with a Kenwood R600 communications receiver and my first Beverage antenna,” said Nigro. Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 26 August - 01 September 2013

Solar activity was at very low to low levels. The period began at very low levels and continued until 28 August. By 29 August, low levels were reached with an isolated C1 flare from Region 1836 (N11, L=339, class/area Cao/180 on 30 August) at 29/0434 UTC. Also on 29 August was a 44 degree filament eruption centered near S40E00 that produced a coronal mass ejection (CME) first seen in SOHO/LASCO C2 imagery at approximately 29/0600 UTC. The ejecta was directed south of the ecliptic plane and was determined to not be geoeffective. On 30 August, a long duration C8/1f flare was observed from Region 1836 at 30/0246 UTC. Associated with this flare were Type II (1318 km/s) and Type IV radio sweeps as well as a partially Earth-directed CME (estimated speed of 1071 km/s). By 31 August through 01 September,only low level C-class flaring was observed. 

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at high levels on 26-27 August due to activity associated with a geoeffective coronal hole high speed stream (CH HSS). Normal to moderate levels were observed for the rest of the period. 

Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet to minor storm levels. Quiet levels were observed until mid-day on 27 August. At approximately 0700 on 27 August, solar wind speed, density and total field measurements began to rise. The Bz component of the went southward to a maximum of -13 nT while wind speed slowly increased to a maximum of 512 km/s by early on 28 August. A solar sector boundary crossing was observed at approximately 27/1816 UTC. The geomagnetic field responded with unsettled to minor storm levels that continued through early on 28 August. By 0800 on 28 August, the total field was diminished to around 4 nT while the solar wind was in decline. Quiet levels were observed once again through late on 30 August, when a positive polarity CH HSS moved into geoeffective position.

Solar wind speeds increased to near 430 km/s while the total field increased to around 9 nT. Total field slowly declined to near 5 nT by late on 31 August, however wind speeds briefly increased at approximately 01/0630 UTC to near 580 km/s before ending the period around 450 km/s. Active periods were observed late on 30 August through early on 31 August, but diminished to quiet to unsettled periods for the remainder of the period. The August 30 CME appeared to have a weak impact early on 02 September; however no significant geomagnetic effects were observed at the time of this report. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 02 September - 28 September 2013

Solar activity is expected to be at very low to low levels. A chance for an M-class flare exists with the return of old Region 1817 (S21, L=241) from 02-15 September. 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels with high levels expected on 04-07 September, 12-16 September, 19-23 September, and again on 27-28 September due to activity associated with CH HSSs. 

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at quiet to active levels on 02 September associated with activity from the 30 August CME. Unsettled to active conditions are expected on 04 September, 10-14 September, 17-19 September, 26-28 September due to CH HSS activity. Quiet to unsettled periods are expected on 23-24 September due to a solar sector boundary crossing.

 State radio "Voice of Russia" with the January 1, 2014 will stop
broadcasting its programs in the shortwave (SW) band "due to the decrease in funding."

Voice of Russia Moscow, Aug_21 - Digit_ru. State radio "Voice of Russia" with the January 1, 2014 will stop broadcasting its programs in the shortwave (HF) range, according to a letter from the Deputy Chairman of the "Voice of Russia" Natalia Zhmay to the head of the company "Russian Television and Radio Broadcasting Network" (RTRS) Andrew Romanchenko.

In a letter to "Voice of Russia" on 15 August indicated that broadcasting in the HF band stops "due to the decrease in funding."

At present, the "Voice of Russia" uses RTRS transmitters for broadcasting to foreign countries in the medium (DM) and short waves. After the cessation of work on short wave broadcasting "Voice Rosii" to foreign countries from the Russian territory will be carried out, according to a source Digit.ru in the industry, with only three low-power medium-wave transmitters located in Transnistria, in Sakhalin and Kaliningrad.

The bulk of broadcast will focus on the FM-band transmitters located in foreign countries. Thus, broadcasting "Voice of Russia" from the territory of Russia is almost completely stopped.

"Voice of Russia" also notified RTRS that it would continue to relay transmitters in the NE and SW bands transmission of foreign radio stations on the basis of contracts with them. Digit.ru source said that among them, such as the "Voice of America", "Vatican Radio" and others.

Previously, since the beginning of 2013 "Voice of Russia" has reduced the total amount of broadcasting short wave up to about 26 hours a day, compared to more than 50 hours in 2012. Thus payment services RTRS "Voice of Russia" in 2013 due to the reduction of broadcasting decreased to 220 million rubles, compared with 550 million rubles in 2012.

Voice of Russia Radio Stops Shortwave Service
The Russian government's international radio broadcasting service Golos Rossii (Voice of Russia) will stop its shortwave broadcasts from January 1 next year, the Digit.ru online journal reported Wednesday.

The shortwave service is closing "due to funding cuts," Voice of Russia deputy director Natalya Zhmai said in a letter dated August 15 to Andrei Romanchenko, head of the Russian Television and Radio Broadcasting Network (RTRBN), the journal said.

VOA Radiogram programming

Hello friends,

VOA Radiogram Program 24 this weekend, 30 August and 1 September 2013, will be rather complex.

Most VOA Radiogram listeners have had success using the RSID (Reed Solomon Identification) to automatically change modes. The RSID is the brief signal that occurs at the beginning of digital mode transmissions. One exception to this success is the RSID for MFSK64, which is not decoded on some listeners' software.

In an attempt to improve RSID performance, I have produced this weekend's VOA Radiogram using Fldigi 3.21.74AB. If you download, install, and use this "alpha" version of Fldigi from  http://www.w1hkj.com/alpha/fldigi/v3.21/, we may have better luck with the RSIDs.

Please keep your previous version of Fldigi, at least for now, in case 3.21.74AB does not work well on your PC.

If you can't, or prefer not to, install 3.21.74AB, I will provide time for you to switch manually to MFSK64 and MFSK128.

In addition to the RSID experiments, VOA Radiogram will also transmit sample text in Vietnamese and Russian. Vietnamese has all sorts of diacritics, and Russian uses a Cyrillic alphabet, so this will be a real workout. You will need to use the UTF-8 character set. In Fldigi, UTF-8 can be selected in a menu located somewhere in Configure > Colors & Fonts, depending on your version.

This weekend's VOA Radiogram will also contain two transmissions in Flmsg format. The first will be a VOA News story similar to those transmitted during past weekends. The second will be a Base64-encoded VOA logo transmitted in MFSK128. Because of the speed of MFSK128, I'm expecting a fairly high failure rate. Worth a try, though.

Please close and restart Fldigi between VOA Radiogram broadcasts this weekend. This is because letters with accents often do not display correctly, i.e. UTF-8 no longer works, after an Flmsg item is received.

Wandering Sheep outreach launched

Wandering Sheep Productions is a new evangelistic outreach of HCJB Global NZ, established to share the gospel over the Internet. The Wandering Sheep Radio Network offers HCJB ministry partners from around the world the opportunity to simulcast their radio station programs to the global Internet audience. Sri Lankan Visitor Visits HCJB Studios

In HCJB’s Melbourne office one of Shelley Martin’s roles is replying to letters and emails received from listeners. Victor Goonetilleke, from Colombo, Sri Lanka, is one who regularly writes to us. So it was quite
a surprise when Victor contacted Shelley to say he was in Melbourne and wished to visit the studios.

Victor is a retired school teacher and an avid ham radio operator (call sign 4S7VK). He has been listening to HCJB since 1969. In his spare time he monitors shortwave broadcasts to his part of the world and regularly sends reception reports to Voice of America, BBC, Vatican Radio and Radio Veritas. He also acts
as Frequency Consultant for local shortwave station SLBC (Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation).

There are many AM and FM stations in Sri Lanka but people like listening to shortwave stations to hear unrestricted news and information. Victor estimates between five and 10 percent of the population of 21 million would listen to shortwave broadcasts.

Victor is a Christian and believes in the value of hearing the gospel via radio. He said, “How to live the Christian life is important: listeners want to know how the gospel relates to real life”. Occasionally
he has the opportunity to speak at his church and draws on what he has heard from HCJB and other Christian stations.
