Radio Dellen International slated for special broadcast

I would like to mention a very special project which will be on the air. It is an event station called Radio Dellen International and we will be broadcasting on 5895 and 6065 (one at a time) with 400 watts of power. Location is Delsbo in the province of Hälsingland, Sweden (some 350 km north of Stockholm). The station is operated by members of Delsbo Radioklubb (DRAK) and we are very interested in knowing how our signal is reaching out. Our broadcasts are focused on the DX Parliament arranged by Delsbo Radioklubb on Jun 01-03, but tests can be expected some days before. We have a separate blog for this: www.radioenthusiasts.blogspot.com . Reception reports can be sent to:
Ronny Forslund, Radio Dellen Int., Vita Huset, SE-179 95 Svartsjö, Sweden. RDI will of course verify correct reception reports, if return postage is enclosed. (Forslund, May 24, and via Liehr)

Transportradio begins new program

Netherlands/Germany

6095, Transportradio, via Wertachtal, Germany. After Radio Netherlands ended its Dutch Service after 65 years on Sat. May 11, it did leave a gap, especially to truck drivers everywhere in Europe. On Monday May 13 an organization called Transportradio therefore started a daily programme in Dutch called "Onderweg" ("En route"). Reception is very good. Their website is www.transportradio.nl and they are also audible on the internet around the clock. I just received a QSL-card, form letter and stickers from Transportradio in a R Netherlands envelope. They confirm my assumption that the transmitter location is Wertachtal with 500 kW. They are on the air on 6095 Mo-Fr at 0800-1000, but Sa and Su KBC uses the frequency in English at 0900-1600. (Van Delft, May 19). Heard on Th May 24 at 0840-1000* in Dutch with a lively program of pop songs and talks e.g. about football. Closing ID:”.Transportradio ... all over Europe.. ”, SINPO 55555. (Petersen)

New clandestine station, Radio Naatham takes to the air

Clandestine

All times UTC // parallel *sign-on // sign-off*

12225, The new Tamil clandestine, Radio Naatham (Cf. 12250 below. Ed), Also heard at 1540-1602*, May 28 with western music, off without ID. (Koie)

12250. Tamil Government starts Radio Broadcast to Sri Lanka on May 18 - Third anniversary of Tamil Genocide.
The first special broadcast was scheduled for May 18 at 1500-1600. Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE) today announced that it will start broadcasting Radio News to the Island of Sri Lanka starting from May 18, the third anniversary of the Genocide of Tamils by the Sri Lankan Government forces. The Tamil Government's Radio, called Naatham, will broadcast in SW frequency. This Radio can also be heard in India, Malaysia and Singapore where large number of Tamils live. While this broadcast will become a bridge between the Tamil diaspora and the Tamils living in Tamil homeland, it will also play a role of politically and emotionally link Tamils worldwide... "While the Tamils in the island of Sri Lanka are struggling to cope with the mass killing and be subject to systematic and pervasive human rights violation on account of their Tamil nationality, this broadcast will ease the pain and give them confidence that their dream of achieving sovereign and independent state of Tamil Eelam will become a reality" said Visuvanathan Rudrakumaran, Prime Minister of the Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE). "This broadcast will pierce the strict media censorship in Sri Lanka and reach the Tamils to give them unbiased information". (EINPresswire.com/ May 16, via Roe via Chakroborty). Heard at 1531-1535, May 21, Tamil songs, 45544. (Petersen)

VL8A Alice Springs testing on 4835 kHz

Australia

4835.00, VL8A, Alice Springs, NT, 2133, May 15. Talks in English, fair // 5025 weaker, no signal on 4910. (Bernardini). On May 28 heard already at 1940-2000 with English pop songs and talk about the weather, phone numbers, 35333. (Petersen).
From May 28 onwards for a period of a couple of months, there's a chance you'll hear VL8A running a single-frequency test on 4835. This is a high-angle skywave, night service intended primarily for a domestic audience within 400 km of the transmitter. The reason for the trial is, because the transmitter contractors are unable to maintain the automation system that controls the day-night change-over between 4835 and 2310. Reception reports on the test should be sent to:
Gary Baxter, ABC Transmission Services, Box 9994, Sydney NSW 2001, AUSTRALIA and not to the address of R. Australia. Received direct from Nigel Holmes, RA. (Seager in ARDXC List, May 17/DX Window 455)

Radio Netherlands Program Preview, May 25-31

The State We're In
Jonathan Groubert and his team look at current events from an unexpected perspective.

This week: Remembrance

A Belgian artist from a family of Nazi collaborators talks about their epic journey on the run from the Allies. A Somali journalist remembers his arrest, imprisonment and the campaign that freed him. And a Dutchman suddenly recalls that he would’ve been sent to a concentration camp, had it not been for an extraordinary act of honesty.

First airing: Saturday 02:00 UTC

Earth Beat
Marnie Chesterton and her team look at the footprint we’re leaving on our planet.

This week: Ice

This week’s show is ice, ice baby and features bucket-loads of the stuff. We meet the ice obsessives, people for whom ice is their job, their way of life, their art. Making music with it, sculpting it or just immersing your body in it: ice is too cool for school.

First airing: Friday 03:00 UTC

South Asia Wired
Stories from South Asia.

This week:

How sand is creating politically relevant art in the Maldives. And we talk to Human Rights Watch about cast-based discrimination in India.

(There'll be a new edition of the programme on Thursday )

First airing: Thursday 10:00 UTC

Bridges With Africa
We're giving the microphone to Diaspora groups in Europe and are linking up with stations in Africa.

This week:

The Dutch government is accused of sending refugees back to countries where they face death
We visit the school that’s training Africa’s next generation of leaders in the art of good government
Ladysmith Black Mambazo brings traditional Zulu music to a new generation

Africa in Progress
Inspiring round-table discussions with guest speakers and in-depth interviews give listeners food for thought.

This week: No sex no fish

Offering sex is often the only way for women traders to buy fish along many of Africa's shores. Auma, a 21 year old single mother, has sex with fishermen in order to get the best catch of the day, a practice known in the local language as 'jaboya'. In this edition we find out what effect it is having in the communities along the shores of Lake Victoria.

Guests: Dr. Gilcrest Lokoel , Jennifer Kere, Alice Nyimbae, Auma

First airing: Monday 18:00 UTC

Commonwealth StoryA selection of winning stories chosen from the large number of entries for the 2010 Commonwealth Short Story Competition.

Somewhere, by Jude Dibia from Nigeria - A child's tale of poverty and loss.

Read by Maynard Eziashi

First airing: Tuesday 01:50 UTC

Global Perspective
Who says I can’t… is the motto of this year’s collaboration of international broadcasters, offering stories of defiance and perseverance.

This week: Who says we can’t be gay, Muslim, and successful?

Elkader is a small town in the center of the American Midwest. It’s not where you’d expect to find a gay couple starting an Algerian restaurant. But this town in Iowa was named after a 19th century Algerian jihadist. WAMU radio takes us to Elkader to see how the residents have found their way through the Islamophobia debate.

First airing: Monday 17:30 UTC

Hear the World
Hear the World is replaced this week by European Jazz Stage, an exploration of European jazz music, with performances from the continent’s hottest clubs, concert halls and festivals, including the spectacular North Sea Jazz Festival.

This week: A jazz vacation

We’ll touch down in northern Holland for Dr. Lonnie smith and the Concertgebouw Jazz Orchestra; then to Amsterdam for bassman Christian McBride and his Inside Straight; and finally to the famous Milky Way for the Ploctones – a “four-headed monster” that is Holland’s most successful band of the moment.

Taking you into a new, five-week season with RNW Music’s jazz programme is your host, Benjamin Herman.

First airing: Monday 01:00 UTC

RNW Classical
Classical concerts from the Royal Concertgebouw as well as studio recordings of Dutch performers, presented by Hans Haffmans.

Radio Netherlands Program Preview, May 18-24

The State We're In
Jonathan Groubert and his team look at current events from an unexpected perspective.

This week: One More Time

A rags-to-riches entrepreneur in Mogadishu gets kidnapped by Al Shabbab, and makes his escape... and his fortune. A man from Peru goes back home after 40 years to confront the man who tortured him. A man in Uganda recounts near-misses with militias and government troops, while an American writer recalls the truth and myth around a family story. And finally: a repeat of our interview with Don Ritchie, who sadly passed away this week in Sydney, Australia after helping stop over 100 people from ending their lives.

First airing: Saturday 02:00 UTC

Earth Beat
Marnie Chesterton and her team look at the footprint we’re leaving on our planet.

This week: The Gift

We explain why not to look a gift horse in the mouth (especially when there’s free energy at stake) and meet the people turning every bit of green space in their town – ditches, roundabouts, abandoned parking lots – into glorious edible gardens where the fruit and vegetables are free for the taking.

First airing: Friday 03:00 UTC

South Asia Wired
Stories from South Asia.

This week:

South Asia Wired features stories from the region, the Diaspora, and events here in Europe of interest to people from South Asia.

(There'll be a new edition of the programme on Thursday )

First airing: Thursday 10:00 UTC

Bridges With Africa
We're giving the microphone to Diaspora groups in Europe and are linking up with stations in Africa.

Uganda’s prostitutes take the lead in the country’s battle against HIV/AIDS
Step back in time: 1940’s East African music is cool again

Africa in Progress
Inspiring round-table discussions with guest speakers and in-depth interviews give listeners food for thought.

This week: No respect: generation gap in Africa

Do young Africans believe in the wisdom of the old? Should they? How do the older generations view today's youth? As we hear in this lively debate between young and old, there is clearly a generation gap in Africa. We ask if - and how - it can be bridged.

First airing: Monday 18:00 UTC

Commonwealth Story
A selection of winning stories chosen from the large number of entries for the 2010 Commonwealth Short Story Competition.

This week: Framing the Nation - by Sylvia Schlettwein, Namibia. Where to hang an old family painting?

Global Perspective
Who says I can’t… is the motto of this year’s collaboration of international broadcasters, offering stories of defiance and perseverance.

This week: Who says I can’t serve?

Armed forces in many countries have 'don't ask, don't tell' policies when it comes to sexual orientation, but not New Zealand. Radio New Zealand’s Mike Gourley introduces us to Lieutenant-Commander Kevin Sanderson - a gay naval officer in the New Zealand Navy - tells his story.

First airing: Monday 17:30 UTC

Hear the World
Hear the World is a world music series where you get to sit in the front row at exciting Dutch world music venues. Hosted by Dheera Sujan.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 30 April - 06 May 2012

Solar activity was moderate. The week was dominated by low level C-class x-ray activity from Regions 1469 (S23, L=335, class/area Eso/140 on 02 May) and 1471 (S21, L=276, class/area=Eho/320 on 02 May) until 05 May. Then, Region 1476 (N10, L=188, class/are=Fhi/760 on 06 May) rotated onto the visible disk and produced three impulsive M-class flares in approximately 12 hours. The largest of these was an M1/Sn at 05/1323Z. Only one M1/1n flare was observed the following day, also from Region 1476, at 06/1747Z.

Several coronal mass ejections (CMEs) were observed during the period, although only three were deemed to be potentially earth-directed. The first of the three occurred on 04 May and was observed in STEREO-Ahead COR2 coronagraph imagery around 0309Z. The second was associated with a C1 flare from Region 1469 at 04/2356Z. The third was associated with a long duration C2/Sf flare from Region 1470 (S15, L=286, class/area=Cro/30 on 05 May) at 05/0639Z and evidence of the eruption was observed in SDO AIA imagery at 05/0600 UTC. No significant radio emissions were observed with any of the CMEs.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at high levels (>1000 pfu) for the first three days (30 April-02 May). After a return to normal backround levels on 03-04 May, flux reached moderate levels on 05 and 06 May.

Geomagnetic field activity was at predominantly quiet levels all week. Unsettled levels occurred late on 02 May into early 03 May associated with a prolonged period of negative Bz and again late on 03 May in response to a solar sector boundary change. Solar wind speed measured at the ACE spacecraft ranged from 300-400 km/s throughout the week.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 07 May - 02 June 2012

Solar activity is expected to be low to moderate as Region 1476 makes its way across the visible solar disk.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 11-14 May and again on 23-29 May in response to recurrent coronal hole high speed wind streams.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to begin at unsettled levels for 07-08 May in response to a solar sector boundary crossing and CME arrival. The arrival of a recurrent coronal hole high speed stream will bring active levels on 09-11 May. After a brief return to quiet levels, unsettled conditions are expected in response to another coronal hole high speed stream on 14-15 May. Mostly quiet levels are then forecast until 19 May when unsettled to active conditions are expected to accompany the arrival of a coronal hole high speed stream. Active levels will persisit through 23 May followed by a return to quiet conditions through the end of the period.
