Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 31 October - 06 November 2016
Solar activity was very low through the period with only a few isolated low-level B-class flaring observed from Regions 2604 (N07, L=261, class/area Bxo/010 on 29 October) and 2605 (N07, L=191, class/area Cro/030 on 31 October). Other activity included several filament eruptions. The first was a filament eruption centered near S10W40 observed in SDO/AIA 193 imagery at 04/0230 UTC with an associated coronal mass ejection (CME) observed in coronagraph imagery off the west limb beginning at 04/0736 UTC. The second filament eruption occurred between 05/0200-0500 UTC in SDO/AIA 193 imagery centered near N24W15. An associated partial halo CME was
observed in coronagraph imagery beginning at 05/0424 UTC. WSA Enlil modelling of the CMEs predicted an arrival approximately early to midday on 08 November. No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels throughout the period with a maximum flux of 21,357 pfu at 31/2030 UTC. Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to active levels. Solar wind parameters were in decline over the period on the trailing end
of a positive polarity coronal hole high speed stream (CH HSS). Solar wind speed declined steadily from near 580 km/s to around 305 km/s by the end of the period. Total field ranged from 1 nT to 8 nT
with prolonged periods of southward Bz from 02-03 November. The geomagnetic field was at quiet to unsettled levels on 31 October-01 November and 04 November, quiet to active levels on 02-03 November, and quiet levels on 05-06 November.
Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 07 November - 03 December 2016
Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels with a slight chance for C-class flares over the forecast period. No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be moderate levels with high levels likely on 07, 10-19, and 22 November-03 December due to CH HSS influence. Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at unsettled to active levels on 08 November and unsettled levels on 09 November due to the arrival of the 04 and 05 November CMEs. Unsettled to active levels are also expected from 10-15 and 19-30 November with G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels likely on 12-13, 21-23, and 25 November and G2 (Moderate) geomagnetic storm levels likely on 21-22 November due to recurrent CH HSS effects.

QOTW117 QSL of the Week: Letter verifying the reception of a silent radio station

Radio Australia and the ABC declined to verify these transmissions, and neither did the university. However, finally a QSL letter was received from the Australian Post Office in Melbourne eight months later, confirming the reception of these two strange transmissions.

Cook Islands - The Mystery of Another Missing Island
his is our final topic in the mini-series of nine feature articles in which we have presented the story of radio broadcasting in the exotic South Pacific nation of the Cook Islands. You will remember in our opening topic on the radio scene in the Cook Islands earlier this year that we presented the story of a mystery island, a missing island. That was the story of Tuanaki, the island with its entire population that apparently was engulfed by the Pacific waters, maybe somewhere around a century ago.
Tuanaki was the most southerly of all of the Cook Islands; they spoke a Polynesian language almost identical to thyat of the people on other nearby islands; there was trade with nearby Mangaia Island; the island was known to European settlers who lived on other nearby islands in the South Pacific; several European sailors and whalers back in that era claimed that they spent time on Tuanaki; and some Cook Islanders even today claim that they have at least one ancestor who was born on Tuanaki Island a hundred years ago.
There was another island in the Cook Island cluster that apparently made a similar disappearance around a century ago, but before we investigate the known information about this another mystery island, we present a miscellany of interesting left over radio items from the Cook Islands.
Communication Station VMR-ZKS-ZKA
The first wireless station in the Cook Islands was installed close to the settlement of Avarua, right on the beach front on the northernmost edge of the island of Rarotonga. The land for this new international communication facility was acquired in 1915, though there was a delay in installing the equipment due to the war that was raging in continental Europe at the time.
Early in the year 1918, work began on the installation of the wireless station, and on April 20, a temporary receiving station, consisting simply of an antenna and a crystal set receiver, was taken into official service. The complete new wireless station, with both the transmitter as well as the receiver, was inaugurated on September 2, under the callsign VMR. At this stage, it was stated that an objective of the new station was that all of the inhabited Cook Islands would be intercommunicated with wireless stations operating in Morse Code.
The Cook Islands first wireless station was modernized in the 1920s with the installation of electronic valve equipment; and in the process of time, the callsign was amended to ZKS, with the usage also of a subsequent callsign ZKA. This station was developed by C&W Cable & Wireless and it was nationalized into Cook Islands Communications in 1991. The building that housed the C&W Cable and Wireless station at Avarua was destroyed by fire during the following year (1992).
It seems that the original 1918 wireless building at the waterfront is still in use, though these days apparently it is a family dwelling, and it can be seen on Google Earth at 21 12 00 S & 159 48 30 W.
Coast Watch Stations
Beginning in 1941, the New Zealand government began to install coastwatch stations on eleven of the Cook Islands. The parent station was located on the capital city island, Rarotonga, with ten substations on other islands.
During the crucial days of the Pacific War, Rarotonga reported all shipping and aircraft movements, both friendly and enemy, to Suva in Fiji, and Suva reported by wireless to Wellington in New Zealand. There was also an interlinking with the coastwatch stations established by the Australian government on other islands in the South Pacific.
On February 18, 1942, a disastrous hurricane struck Suvarow Atoll, making it necessary for the operator and two guardian soldiers to climb nearby trees and to cling on until the waters of the tidal surge subsided. When the ordeal was over, they reassembled the salvageable electronic equipment and radioed for help.
Five months later, a relief ship arrived, carrying 6 tons of earth to replace that which had been washed away by the storm, and also coconut palms and other forms of vegetation. They also brought equipment for the erection of a strong wooden tower 20 feet high.
On July 26, 1944, all of the coastwatch stations in the Cook islands were closed, due to the fact that the active warfare scene had moved far to the north. However at this stage, the coastwatch stations on both Suvarow and Nassau Islands were taken over as weather reporting stations, though the Nassau station was closed during the following year (1945).
FM Comes to the Cook Islands
The first FM station in the Cook Islands was an informal irregular station that was set up by Mr. Gordon Brereton around 1978 so that he could demonstrate FM reception for the benefit of customers in his duty free shop in Avarua. Brereton constructed an FM tuner in his own radio shop, and his unofficial music service became quite popular with the local residents.
At the time there was no other FM station on the air anywhere in the Cook Islands and his informal, irregular and unofficial FM service apparently received tacit approval from the local authorities. Even though it was operating at a low power, yet the signal covered most of the capital city island.
On the first occasion that Brereton submitted an application for a regular FM license, this was denied. However in a follow up application in November 1979, he was indeed granted an official license , and thus Radio Ikurangi was born.
Radio Ikurangi, which was named after one of the mountains that can be seen from the windows of the radio station, was granted a power of 500 watts with the official callsign ZK1ZD and it has always operated on 103.3 MHz. Over a period of time, repeaters have been installed at different locations, including suburban Avarua, Mt Tekou in the center of the island, and on distant Aitutake Island.
In order to relay shortwave programming from other countries, such as from Radio New Zealand International and Radio Australia, Radio Ikurangi has used the famous FRG7 recdeiver, manufactured by Yaesu in Japan, as their shortwave receiver. They also receive recordings from the BBC and from radio stations in the United States, as a form of delayed program relay.
Adventist Radio in the Cook Islands
It was back in July 1982 that Adventist radio programs were first broadcast from Radio Cook Islands and they were on the air twice weekly on mediumwave 630 kHz and shortwave 11760 kHz. A few enterprising radio aficionados in the South Pacific took the opportunity to tune in to these programs for which QSL cards were issued.
Then in the mid 1980s, the Cook Islands along with several other Pacific and Asian locations were given preliminary consideration as a location for establishing the new shortwave service of Adventist World Radio. However, as subsequent events have demonstrated, Guam became the location of choice.
Give a few more years, and then the main Adventist church in the Cook Islands began to lay plans for the installation of their own local FM station. That was in the year 2000, and six years later they obtained a license. Just three days later, on Sunday April 23, their first test transmissions went on the air.
Give three more days and the new gospel radio station was officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Jim Maurai. Station TK ANA 3 is located in the national capital Avarua, and it is heard on 98.7 MHz. Programming is a mix of local productions and a satellite relay from Life Talk Radio in Riverside California.
Radio Cook Islands QSL Cards
During the past 60 years and more, Radio Cook Islands has issued more than half a dozen different QSL cards and generally they have been artistic representations depicting local scenes and local people. The best known QSL card from the Cook Islands shows a man blowing a conch shell, with full QSL text details to be filled in by pen or typewriter. In 1982, a group of international radio monitors from Australia and New Zealand printed a limited edition QSL card which they took with them on a visit to the Cook Islands. Then in 1989, the Ontario DX Association in Canada printed 500 copies of a special QSL card for Radio Cook Islands that were sent out by boat.
Another Missing Island: Victoria Island And now we come to the brief story of the other missing island in the Cook cluster. Victoria island is, or probably was, located in the far north of the Cook Islands, even further north than Penrhyn Island. It is reported that a group of copra cutters from other South Pacific Islands visited uninhabited Victoria Island in 1875, and they remained there in their employment for 18 months. When they departed, the island was again uninhabited.
During the 1880s, William Marsters claimed that he and a friend by the name of Levy joined a gang of laborers from Fiji and elsewhere who visited Victoria for the purpose of planting coconut groves on the island. They were left on the island with sufficient food for several months. In the meantime though, the employment company went bankrupt and the toilers on Victoria Island were forgotten.
By the time they were finally rescued, they had eaten everything they could find, including the coconuts that they had brought for planting. William Marsters described Victoria as a fairly well wooded volcanic island with a barrier reef and a lagoon. It was some time after this episode that Marsters settled on nearby Palmerston Island where he was subsequently identified as the father of a thousand descendants. It is reported that Victoria Island had disappeared by the year 1921 when Captain Andy Thomson aboard the schooner Tagua ship went searching for it, but was unable to locate it.
Strange Disappearance of Amelia Earhart
In 1937, during a flight over the South Pacific the famous aviatrix Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan vanished without any apparent trace. One unsubstantiated theory as to what happened, to them though it is seldom suggested these days, is that they landed their plane on an island and the island subsequently disappeared, in the same way as did Tuanaki and Victoria in the Cook Islands a century ago.

Weekend VOA Radiogram Schedule

The B16 HF broadcasting season began on 30 October. Many shortwave broadcast frequencies were changed on that date. The only change for VOA Radiogram is the Saturday 0930-1000 UTC broadcast which will be on new 5865 kHz as of Saturday, 5 November. This transmission is usually heard in Australia and New Zealand and sometimes in parts of Asia. And listeners in Europe should be on the lookout for this 5865 kHz as the hours of darkness increase in the northern hemisphere. All other VOA Radiogram frequencies are the same: see the transmission schedule below.
Shortwave propagation should
have recovered by this weekend, but just in case, one VOA News story will be in
the Olivia 32-2000 mode. The RSID should automatically change your mode, but if
not, Olivia 32-2000 requires a custom setting, i.e.: Op Mode > Olivia >
Custom > Bandwidth: 2000, Tones: 32. A quick way to do this is to use one the
Fldigi macro buttons below the transmit pane, with this code:
. I will provide 15 seconds after the Olivia
32-2000 RSID in case a manual change is required. Also, for successful decode of
the Olivia 32-2000, turn the Fldigi squelch (SQL)
off.
O o one heard the “mystery
transmission” last weekend before and after the 1600-1630 broadcast last
weekend. You might try again this weekend, even as early at 1540 UTC, before the
North Carolina transmitter turns on its carrier on 17580 kHz.

IBC (Italian Broadcasting Corporation) has a broadcast to Europe on 6070 kHz and new 3975 kHz, Wednesdays, at the new time of 1800-2100 UTC. The MFSK32 and Olivia 16-500 are still at 2030-2100 UTC. IBC has also added a medium wave transmission Saturday 2000-2030 UTC from Radio Studio X, 1584 kHz, in Terni, Italy, with MFSK32 at 2025-2030. IBC also has MFSK32 transmissions via WRMI in Florida: Friday 0125-0200 UTC on 9955 kHz (Thursday 9:25 pm EDT), part of its 0100-0130 broadcast. This transmission is usually heard in Australia and New Zealand and sometimes in parts of Asia. And listeners in Europe should be on the lookout for this 5865 kHz as the hours of darkness increase in the northern hemisphere. All other VOA Radiogram frequencies are the same: see the transmission schedule below.
Reception of VOA Radiogram last
weekend was affected by the geomagnetic storm that started 27 October. For the
Saturday 1600 UTC broadcast on 17580 kHz, there was a definite line in Europe
south of which reception was good, and north of which reception was
bad-to-nonexistent. There were even marked differences in reception between the
south and north of England.

The role of Vatican Radio, traditionally operated by Jesuits, will be less prominent in a new overall Vatican communications strategy, predicts Vatican journalist Sandro Magister of L’Espresso.Vatican Radio, which employs a large staff to serve its many different language sections, is also one of the most expensive communications efforts of the Vatican. With no advertising, the broadcasts produce little revenue, and Vatican Radio runs at an annual deficit of €20- 30 million ($22-$33 million) a year.

Australian Shortwave Callsign VLK
In
the progressive presentation of topics on Australian shortwave callsigns in the
three letter alphabetic series running from VLA to VLZ, we come to the callsign
VLK. However, as we discovered in all of
the ten previous similar topics, the first usage of the callsign VLK was not in
Australia, but rather in New Zealand; or perhaps more accurately, in New
Zealand waters.

The SS Makura was launched in
Glasgow Scotland in 1908, and soon afterwards when Marconi wireless equipment
was installed it was granted the callsign MKU.
The Makura was the largest ship in the Union Steamship Company of New
Zealand, and when it was re-registered in New Zealand, the callsign was changed
to VLK.
The Makura achieved two claims to
fame: in 1910, a long distance game of chess was played by wireless with the
Australian SS Zealandia in opposite directions of the Pacific Ocean. Then in 1923, the Makura printed a regular
edition of an ocean newspaper under the title The Wireless News. After 2.3 million miles of voyaging, the
Makura was scrapped in Shanghai in 1937.
During the year 1924, a new low
powered wireless station was installed on the small Pacific island Niue
(NEW-AYE). Then three years later due to
an international re-shuffle of callsigns, radio stations in New Zealand and its
island dependencies lost the callsigns with a V prefix, and instead they were
granted callsigns with a Z prefix. Thus,
we would presume that the VLK callsign on Niue Island was modified to ZLK.
The next application of the callsign
VLK was indeed in Australia, for a new shortwave transmitter at the large AWA
radio station at Pennant Hills on the edge of suburban Sydney. This new VLK was a 10 kW unit that was
installed temporarily to give international coverage for a series of special
events in Sydney in 1928.
This VLK transmitter was
subsequently taken into regular communication service and it was on the air
under three different callsigns; VLZ to New Zealand, VLJ to Java in Indonesia,
and under its own licensed callsign as VLK to England. When Pennant Hills was taken over for the
international program service of Australia Calling in December 1939, the VLK
transmitter was on the air under a new callsign VLQ.
The fourth application of the
Australian callsign VLK was for a new shortwave transmitter in Port Moresby New
Guinea during their era before independence.
A new Australian made STC 10 kW transmitter, Model 4SU488, was
inaugurated on June 29, 1963 as VLK, and this callsign was in continuous usage
until a new callsign P2K was allocated at independence in 1975.
However, strange as it may seem, the
callsign VLK was also in use by Radio Australia for an overlapping period of
nearly five years. In 1971, three
shortwave transmitters at 250 kW in Darwin were phased into usage for coverage
into Asia, and the callsigns for these three units were VLK, VLL and VLM.
Thus the program service VLK was
applied to any of the three transmitters that were installed at the Cox
Peninsula shortwave station. However, at
the time there was no line feed from Melbourne to Darwin, and so it was
necessary for the VLK programming to be transmitted on shortwave from the ABC
Radio Australia stations located at Shepparton and Lyndhurst. At Lyndhurst, a 5 kW SSB, single sideband
transmitter and a 10 kW broadcast transmitter were used at varying times as a
VLK program relay to Darwin, as was also a 100 kW transmitter at
Shepparton.
The final leg of the more than 2,500
mile long microwave broadband line running from Mt Isa in Queensland up to Darwin in the Northern Territory was finally
completed in 1974, and so the shortwave feeder relays from Lyndhurst and Shepparton
were no longer necessary.
However, a few months later at Christmas time
(1974), Cyclone Tracy disabled the Darwin station and some of the VLK
programming was transferred back to Shepparton.
Ostensibly as a temporary fill in, a
new three transmitter shortwave station was installed in an empty American NASA
building near Carnarvon in Western Australia during the following year
1975. A 250 kW BBC transmitter Model
SK3F3 was inaugurated at Carnarvon on December 20 (1975) and this unit took
over much of the VLK program service.
There were a few subsequent
occasions when the service at Carnarvon was interrupted, and a 100 kW at
Shepparton took over the VLK service for a short time on a fill-in basis.
Then 9 years later (1984), a 300 kW
Thomson Model YRE2320 was inaugurated at Carnarvon and for the next 12 years,
this unit took over the VLK program service.
However, the entire Carnarvon station was closed 8 years later on July
31, 1996, and the 300 kW VLK was slated for transfer to Darwin where it would
be installed under the callsign VLT.
There was a delay in the installation of this unit at Cox Peninsula, and
eventually when it was installed, it was given an alternative callsign VLU.
The ABC in Port Moresby issued many
QSL cards verifying their
10 kW VLK transmissions, and these were the regular Australia map cards in
varying styles. It is known that Radio
Australia issued QSL cards verifying VLK transmissions in Carnarvon and
Shepparton, and perhaps also Darwin as well as Lyndhurst.
We Return to the Shortwave Scene on the Island of Guam

The first two transmitters were Thomson units Model TRE2311P from Gennevilliers in France, and the additional two units were Continental Model 418E and 418F from Dallas Texas in the United States. In addition, there were four curtain antennas TCI Model 611 from Fremont in California arranged in two oairs, together with one dummy load for test purposes. Beginning in the year 2002, Adventist World Radio began a modernization project at the Guam station, and five almost new transmitters were obtained from a silent government army station at Langefontein on the west coast of South Africa. That was the story in another recent feature here in Wavescan.
The five shortwave transmitters from South Africa were originally manufactured by Thomson ABB, Model Number SK51C3-3P from continental Europe, and the first shipment, in 15 containers, arrived in Guam early in the year 2002. In subsequent shipment, the remaining equipment from South Africa arrived in Guam.
Under the capable administration of Chief Engineer Brook Powers, each of the older transmitters was taken out of service, carefully removed from its location within the transmitter building, and ultimately packed for shipping to another shortwave station overseas. The first transmitter removed from AWR Guam was the Continental KSDA3, and it was replaced by Langefontein Transmitter 2. This newly installed transmitter KSDA3 was inaugurated on September 26, 2002, and as part of the contractual agreement with Sentech in South Africa, David Berndt was already present when the first Langefontein transmitter was initially energized. The well known Kathy Otto from the Sentech-RSA shortwave station at Meyerton in South Africa states that David Berndt is an acknowledged authority on the European made Thomson ABB transmitters that had been installed temporarily at Langefontein. He made periodic visits to Guam to aid in the installation and commissioning of the Langefontein transmitters at shortwave station KSDA.
The double process, removing an old transmitter and installing a new, was accomplished with limited down time. In this way, four old transmitters were removed and replaced by five almost new units. When all were totally installed, the fifth transmitter was maintained as a hot standby ready to replace any of the other on air units, if needed.
As each new transmitter was installed, the AWR office in Indianapolis offered QSL cards specifically identifying which transmitter was logged by the international radio monitor. Thus it was possible for the dedicated listener to verify each of the five new transmitters by number during the nearly two year period of installation, running from September 2002 up to mid 2004. In early 2011, approval was granted for AWR to erect an additional fifth curtain antenna on the property at Facpi Point, and this would enable KSDA to be on the air with all five transmitters simultaneously. At a special rededication ceremony at the AWR shortwave station on Guam on Tuesday September 3, 2013, Adventist World Radio welcomed a group of international and local guests to mark the completion of this major expansion for the station. The modification of the existing four antenna systems and the installation of a large new curtain antenna has increased the transmission capability of shortwave station KSDA by approximately 25%.
The official opening ceremony for the new antenna system was held on the antenna field, at the base directly under the newest tower, and this enabled attendees to experience close up the massive size of this equipment. His Excellency the Governor of Guam, the Honorable Eddie Baza Calvo, was present for the occasion, as was also the president of Adventist World Radio, Dr. Dowell Chow. With the erection of the new curtain antenna and with transmitter KSDA5 now in regular active service, KSDA Guam is on the air with nearly 300 hours of programming each week in 34 languages .

On the Air from Boston Harbor

The original Bluenose schooner was designed and built as a twin masted sailing ship at Lunenberg Nova Scotia in 1921. It was designed as a regular fishing vessel and also for racing and to its credit, the Bluenose made record hauls of fish, and it also won almost every open ocean sailing contest that it ever entered.
The good ship Bluenose (the nickname for a Nova Scotian) was 161 feet long by 26 feet wide and it was launched with great fanfare on March 26, 1921. In order to enter a subsequent competitive speed contest, the Bluenose participated in a regular mid year fishing season in the Grand Banks off Newfoundland with a resultant nice haul that aided their financial circumstances.
The International Fishermen's Trophy was a new speed contest for regular fishing boats that was organized by the Halifax Herald newspaper in 1920, and on that first occasion, an American vessel, the Esperanto was the winner. On the second occasion for the staging of this international fishing schooner race, the Canadian Bluenose competed against the American boat Elsie and won.
The 1921 event took place again in the same large Halifax Harbour Nova Scotia, and the event was held from October 22 - 24 (1921). Two exciting, competing races were held, and the Bluenose outran the Elsie on both occasions.
In order to provide immediate radio coverage of this 1921 race, radio transmitters and receivers were placed on board the press boat, the Tyrian, and in the office of the Halifax Herald. Progressive news of this International boat race was flashed in Morse Code to the newspaper office on the nearby mainland, and it should be remembered that radio broadcasting at this stage was not yet two years old.
Again, the Bluenose was the winner in the International Fishermen’s Races that were held in 1922, 1923 and 1931; and again, it is evident that progressive coverage was maintained by radio on each occasion from accompanying boats carrying media personnel. The 1923 race was held in the waters off Boston against the American ship Columbia.
The final staging of the International Fishermen's Trophy took place in October 1938. By that time, sailing ships had given way to diesel powered fishing boats, the international political scene across the Atlantic in continental Europe was becoming uncomfortable, and the Bluenose was now getting quite old. Nevertheless, the Bluenose was repaired and modified for one final occasion, the last staging of the International Fishermen's Trophy.
The final challenge in the International Fishermen's Trophy took place between the Canadian Bluenose and the American Gertrude L. Thebaud and it was made up of five separate races twice around an 18 mile triangle off the coast of Gloucester, a little north from Boston. These events were spread out over a period of two and a half weeks running from October 9 to 26, 1938. True to form, Bluenose won three of these five racing events.
Widespread radio coverage was achieved with transmitters on three different ships. On board the Bluenose were two personnel from CBC, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation; news reporter Edward Briggs and radio operator Fred (Frank) Willis. Onboard the Gertrude L. Thebaud was an NBC crew with Bob Evans from Boston mediumwave WBZ-WBZA; and on board the US Coastguard ship Chelan was a radio crew with their own transmitter providing live commentaries for mediumwave stations and networks in Boston.
Available evidence would suggest that the special transmitter on board the Thebaud was the 100 watt W10XH, which was in use on the same ship for Arctic exploration during the previous year (1937). The CBC in Canada issued a regular 1938 QSL card for the reception of their transmitter on the Bluenose which operated with 40 watts on 2264 kHz. The callsign for the occasion was VE9ID, and the location was given on the QSL card as Boston Harbor.
The Bluenose was sold into the Caribbean in 1942; it was accosted by a German submarine during the War; and it struck a reef off Haiti and was abandoned with its load of bananas in 1946. However, as one historic report states: One thing is absolutely certain, the Bluenose legacy lives on in the hearts and minds of many Canadians!
And before we leave the radio scene in Boston Harbor, we present the story of the radio broadcast from the British navy vessel HMS Newcastle. This ship arrived in Boston Harbor for repairs on September 20, 1941. The lengthy repair work was completed in December, and before the ship left port for the return voyage across the Atlantic to England, shortwave station WRUL in Boston seized the opportunity to make a goodwill remote broadcast to England and to British ships at sea.
Life magazine for December 15 (1941) shows a picture of the WRUL program crew on board the HMS Newcastle that was taken during the actual broadcast itself. At the time, WRUL was on the air at Hatherly Beach with two shortwave transmitters, one at 100 kW and another at 50 kW.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 24 - 30 October 2016
Solar activity was at very low levels during the period. The two numbered regions on the visible disk were Region 2603 (N13, L=340 class/area Dao/080 on 26 October) and 2604 (N07, L=261, class/area
Bxo/010 on 29 October). Other activity included a slow moving coronal mass ejection (CME) directed mostly south of the ecliptic beginning at 30/1012 UTC in SOHO/LASCO C2 imagery. The source of the CME was unclear and may be associated with magnetic re-connection near S30E15. Preliminary analysis indicated a possible weak glancing blow arrival around midday on 04 November. Further analysis is currently underway. No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at moderate levels on 24-25 October and reached high levels from 26-30 October. The largest flux value of the period was 47,726 pfu observed at 27/1530 UTC.
Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to G3 (Strong) storm levels. The period started off under the waning influence of a weak isolated positive polarity coronal hole high speed stream (CH HSS). Solar wind speeds were mostly in the 380 km/s to 430 km/s range with total field values between 5 nT and 10 nT and prolonged periods of southward Bz. The geomagnetic field responded with quiet to active levels on 24 October. Early on 25 October, total field began to rise
to a maximum of 21 nT at 25/1016 UTC while the Bz component deflected southward to -17 nT indicating the onset of a co-rotating interaction region. This was followed by a rise in solar wind speed to around 750-830 km/s as a large, polar-connected, positive polarity CH HSS moved into geoeffective position. Coronal hole influence declined to the 530-680 km/s by midday on 27 October and remained there until the end of the period. The geomagnetic field responded with active to G3 (Strong) storm levels on 25 October, active to G2 (Moderate) storm levels on 26 October, unsettled to G1 (Minor) storm levels on 27 and 29 October, unsettled to active levels on 28 October, and quiet to active levels on 30 October.
Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 31 October - 26 November 2016
Solar activity is expected to be at very low to low levels throughout the forecast period.
No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at moderate levels with high levels likely from 31 October-06 November, 12-19 November, and again from 22-26 November due to CH HSS influence.
Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at unsettled to active levels from 31 October-01 November, 11-15, and 19-26 November with G1 (Minor) storm levels likely on 13, 21-23, and 25 November and G2 (Moderate) storm levels likely on 21-22 November due to recurrent CH
HSS activity.

VOA Radiogram Weekend Schedule

The mystery MFSK32 transmission which has been heard occasionally before and after the VOA Radiogram broadcast Saturdays at 1600-1630 UTC on 17580 kHz was not heard last weekend by any listeners in Europe. It was heard by Mike in Washington state, at about 1542 UTC. The fact that the transmission was heard only on the US west coast introduces some interesting propagational questions about the station’s location. The mystery station also now seems to be transmitting before the North Carolina transmitter signs on at about 1545 UTC with an open carrier. Let me know if you hear and/or decode the transmission this weekend.
Many of us have noticed more hum on the 50+ year old transmitter in North Carolina. The strongest manifestation of the hum within the passband is at 360 Hz. This mixes with the VOA Radiogram MFSK32 signal which, centered on 1500 Hz, extends from about 1250 to 1750 Hz. The “ghosts” above and below the main MFSK32 trace is caused by mixing products: 1250 minus 360 = 890 Hz; 1750 plus 360 = 2110 Hz; and all frequencies between. For the most part the ghosts do
not adversely affect the decoding of the MFSK32. However, the Fldigi RxID is
sometimes spoofed by the lower ghost, resulting in Fldigi thinking that the
digital mode is centered on 1140 Hz. This prevents a successful decode unless
you set Fldigi manually to a center frequency of ~1500 Hz.
This weekend’s VOA Radiogram
will be all MFSK32. Let’s hope the adverse effects of the geomagnetic storm that
started on 25 October will have subsided by Saturday and
Sunday.

Europe on 6070 kHz and new 3975 kHz, Wednesdays, at the new time of
1800-2100 UTC. The MFSK32 and Olivia 16-500 are still at 2030-2100 UTC. IBC has
also added a medium wave transmission Saturday 2000-2030 UTC from Radio Studio
X, 1584 kHz, in Terni, Italy, with MFSK32 at 2025-2030. IBC also has MFSK32
transmissions via WRMI in Florida: Friday 0125-0200 UTC on 9955 kHz (Thursday
9:25 pm EDT), part of its 0100-0130 broadcast. And Saturday at 0155-0200 UTC
(Friday evening 9:55 pm EDT), on 11580 kHz, part of its 0130-0200 broadcast.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 17 - 23 October 2016 Solar activity was very low to low with a single C-class flare observed on 17 Oct. At 17/0038 UTC, a C4 flare was observed from
Region 2599 (S15, L=144, class/area Cko/460 on 05 Oct) which had rotated around the southwest limb on 15 Oct. A nine degree long filament, centered near N26W02, was observed erupting in SDO/AIA 304 and GONG imagery at about 20/1300 UTC. A slow-moving, faint CME was
observed in LASCO C2 imagery with possible effects observed on 23 October. No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit ranged from normal to very high levels. On 18 Oct very high levels were observed, with a peak level of 52,137 pfu. High levels were observed on 17 Oct and 19-22 Oct. Normal to high levels were observed on 23 Oct. Geomagnetic field activity during the reporting period ranged from quiet to active levels. Quiet to active conditions were observed on 17 Oct and tapered into quiet to unsettled levels through 19 Oct due to the waning effects of a CH HSS. Quiet conditions were observed from 20-22 Oct under an ambient solar wind regime. Quiet to unsettled conditions were noted 23-24 Oct due to a SSBC and initial
CH HSS effects.
The solar wind environment was above background levels on 17 Oct under the influence of a CH HSS with wind speeds between 700-800 km/s. Wind speeds gradually tapered to background conditions on 18-19 Oct. Winds increased again to around 450 km/s and minor enhancements to total field were observed on 23 Oct due to a SSBC and weak CH HSS effects.
