Shortwave Radiogram schedules, December 11-13

 

Hello friends,

The reception last weekend was difficult in some parts of the world, but there were plenty of good decodes nevertheless. A good place to see results reported by listeners is the @SWRadiogram Twitter account. If you are not on Twitter, point your browser to https://twitter.com/swradiogram and scroll down.

During the Sunday 0800-0830 UTC broadcast, via receivers in Europe, we again had success sidestepping the STANAG 4285 data transmission on 5850 kHz. We did this by placing the closing announcements in MFSK32 at 2000 Hz rather than our usual 1500 Hz.  See examples here and here. This weekend the closing MFSK32 will be at 2000 Hz on all the transmissions. Your Fldigi RxID will take you to 2000 Hz, if: Configure > IDs > RsID ... "Searches passband" is selected and and "Retain tx freq lock" is deselected.

Videos of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 181) are provided Scott in Ontario (Friday 1300 UTC) and by Octavio in Costa Rica (Sunday 2330 UTC) (also here). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. The analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

And speaking of Roger in Germany, he has prepared a small image that we can use to detect multipath shortwave (HF) reception. This will be the first of the images at 12:22 into the broadcast. Multipath reception occurs when the signal reaches you via the usual short path and by one or more other paths, possibly the long path around Earth. You can hear it as an echo. You can see it as visually interesting ghosts in your decoded images. If you are experiencing multipath, the header for the image might not work, so it's a good idea to record the show and try several times to make the header work from your playback.

This weekend's show is in the usual MFSK32 and MFSK64, with ten images (1 x MFSK32 and 9 x MFSK64).

“This is a Music Show” is the newest addition to digital modes via analog shortwave. Most of the show is a music show, but the host transmits some MFSK text and image near the end of the broadcast. It’s transmitted on WRMI, Thursdays at 0200-0300 UTC on 5850 kHz (Wednesday evening in the Americas) and a new time also on WRMI, Wednesdays at 2100-2200 UTC on 7780 kHz (aimed towards Europe) . New York and Pennsylvania NBEMS nets. Most weekends, as KD9XB, I check in to the New York NBEMS (Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Software) net Saturday at 1300 UTC on 3584 kHz USB, and the Pennsylvania NBEMS net Sunday at 1230 UTC on 3583 kHz USB (with out-of-state check-ins now starting at 1130 UTC). Check-ins are usually in Thor 22, and messages are in MFSK32. Messages generally use the Flmsg add-on to Fldigi. If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check-in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg. All India Radio rebranding their Home Service

Effective on January 1, 2021, the airwaves in India will not be the same again, as All India Radio is rebranding all its Home Services on mediumwave and FM. 

Each State/ Union Territory (except Jammu & Kashmir and Chandigarh) will have a separate network of its own. The programs will be originated by the station in the capital city of each state which will be relayed by all other stations in that particular state. 

Now many AIR stations broadcast their own programs with occasional relays from New Delhi / State capital etc. This system will end on 31 Dec 2020.

There will also be nine new regional channels for entertainment, in addition to the Vividh Bharati Service. 

It may be noted that this system is already followed by Doordarshan TV.

New Release: Broadcasting in Russian Handbook now available

 

The 29th edition of the Broadcasting in Russian Handbook, published by the St. Petersburg DX Club, has recently been released. 

The handbook is the most comprehensive guide to broadcasts in Russian on long, medium, and short waves. The Air Broadcasting section features all radio stations transmitting in Russian at present, both from Russia and abroad, which could be received in Russia, CIS, and surrounding countries

(total 46 stations from 29 countries and territories of the world).

Station listings include frequency and program schedules, transmitter location and power, target areas, postal addresses, phone/fax numbers, web sites, social network pages, e-mail addresses as well as QSL policy info.

The schedules are generally valid until 27 March 2021 (during the B-20 broadcasting season).

The Internet Broadcasting section contains information on Internet broadcasting of 16 stations of 14 countries and territories of the world.

The Handbook is exclusively in Russian and distributed as a hardcopy only.

Voice of Mongolia - missing in action ?

 

Since the beginning of the B20 Winter season, commencing on October 24, 2020, there have been no reports or observations, of Voice of Mongolia broadcasting on 12084.8 or 12014.8 kHz.

It is unknown if this is due to transmitter issues, or the station has ceased airing on shortwave. If active, the station should be broadcasting on the following schedule. Your comments and observations are welcomed at w4gvh@frontier.com

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 30 November - 06 December 2020

Solar activity reached low levels this week due to C-class flare activity. A total of ten C-class flares were observed this period.

Region 2786 (S17, L=343, class/area=Cko/1000 on 25 Nov) produced three C1 flares, Region 2787 (N30, L=303, class/area=Axx/10 on 30 Nov) produced one C1 flare, and Region 2790 (S22, L=252,

class/area=Hsx/110 on 03 Dec) produced six C-class flares. The largest event of the period was a C3/Sf from Region 2790 at 01/0427 UTC. 

Multiple CMEs associated with flare activity and filament eruptions, predominately off the east limb, were observed this week, however, none were Earth-directed. 

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit. The greater than 10 MeV proton flux became enhanced on 30 Nov following a CME off the NE limb on 26 Nov, and remained enhanced through 05 Dec. The greater than 10 Mev proton flux reached a peak of 6.5 pfu at 01/0655

UTC. 

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels on 02-03 Dec, with normal to moderate flux levels observed throughout the remainder of the summary period. 

Geomagnetic field activity was quiet to unsettled on 30 Nov, and quiet on 01-06 Dec, under a nominal solar wind regime. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 07 December - 02 January 2021

Solar activity is expected to be very low to low throughout the outlook period. 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 20-26 and 29-30 Dec. Normal to moderate levels are expected to prevail throughout the remainder of the period. 

Geomagnetic field activity is anticipated to reach G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels on 19 Dec, with active levels likely on 18 and 24 Dec, due to recurrent CH HSS influences. Quiet and quiet to unsettled conditions are expected to prevail throughout the

remainder of the outlook period.

Special Thanksgiving programming from WBCQ

News from WBCQ and FTIO Music host, William Tilford writes A WBCQ Thanksgiving will broadcast from WBCQ. Even in a year like this one, there is much for which we can be thankful for, and in that spirit, WBCQ The Planet will air special programming, courtesy of time donated by Allan and Angela Weiner, will present A WBCQ Thanksgiving

Programming is scheduled for Thursday, November 26 from 10pm-11pm EST (0300-0400 UTC Friday, November 27) on 6160 and 7490 kHz. 

This very special broadcast will present a variety of content including; Marion's Attic and Uncle Bill's Melting Pot will present music for the occasion, The beHAVior Night Players Tell The Thanksgiving Story will present a scripted short play, and The Lumpy Gravy Radio Show will serve up some helpings from both Area 51 and Area 61, a mix of music and old-time radio content.

The Isle of Music has a couple of time changes from November. The new schedule is Sunday 1500 on 9400 via Spaceline, Bulgaria, Tuesday 0100 on 7490 via WBCQ, and Tuesday 1900 and on Saturday at 1300. Both will broadcast on 6070 kHz via Channel 292.

Shortwave Radiogram schedules, Friday-Sunday

 

Hello friends,

Is anyone using, or attempting to use, Fldigi with the MacOS Big Sur? John in Texas, who reports every week via email, writes: "just upgraded to Apple's new OS Big Sur 11.0.1 and FLDigi seems to communicate with the radio, but the FLdigi 4.1.15.05 display is blank." He also tried upgrading to Fldigi 4.1.16 and moving back to 4.1.14, with no success. If you have advice, please send it to our usual email radiogram@verizon.net and I'll pass it on.

During our Sunday 0800-0830 UTC transmission, 5850 and 7730 kHz from WRMI Florida, there is now enough darkness over the North Atlantic to enable reception in Europe, at least in some locations. Lately there has been a data signal on 5850 kHz that disrupts reception on that frequency, although our MFSK might be partially decodable on either side of the co-channel signal.

Videos of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 178) are provided by Scott in Ontario (Friday 1300 UTC) and UR1002 SWL in California (the MFSK32 closing of the Friday 1500 UTC DRM transmission as received on a Uniwave Di-Wave 100 DRM radio). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. The analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

This weekend's show is in our tried-and-true MFSK32 and MFSK64, with eleven MFSK64 images.

New York and Pennsylvania NBEMS nets. Most weekends, as KD9XB, I check in to the New York NBEMS (Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Software) net Saturday at 1300 UTC on 3584 kHz USB, and the Pennsylvania NBEMS net Sunday at 1230 UTC on 3583 kHz USB (with out-of-state check-ins now starting at 1130 UTC). Check-ins are usually in Thor 22, and messages are in MFSK32. Messages generally use the Flmsg add-on to Fldigi. If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check-in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg. If you can decode the net, send me an email to radiogram@verizon.net, or tweet to @SWRadiogram, and I will let them know you are tuned in. Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 09 - 15 November 2020

Solar activity was at very low to low levels during the period. Very low levels were observed on 09 Nov and 13-15 Nov, while low levels occurred on 10-12 Nov. Region 2781 (S23, L=255, class/area Eki/475 on 06 Nov) produced a C1/Sf flare observed at 10/1946 UTC. The C-class activity was observed on 11-12 Nov from new Region 2782 (S31, L=155, class/area Cro/030 on 12 Nov), the largest was a C2/Sf flare observed at 11/1912 UTC. No Earth-directed CME activity was observed during the period. 

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels on 11 Nov with a maximum flux of 2,250 pfu observed at 11/1655 UTC. Normal to moderate levels were observed on 09-10 Nov and 12-15 Nov. 

Geomagnetic field activity was quiet throughout the period. A nominal solar wind regime dominated the period with a mostly neutral IMF. Solar wind speeds generally ranged between about 295 km/s to 445 km/s under a predominately negative phi orientation. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 16 November - 12 December 2020

Solar activity is expected to be very low from 16-27 Nov and 12 Dec. The return of old Region 2781 (S23, L=255) from 28 Nov - 11 Dec is expected to increase solar activity levels to very low to low. 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels on 16 - 20 Nov and again on 29 Nov - 12 Dec. High levels are expected from 21-28 Nov due to recurrent CH HSS influence. 

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at quiet to unsettled levels on 21 - 25 Nov and again on 03-04 Dec due to recurrent CH HSS influence. Active intervals are possible on 22, 24 and 25 Nov. Mostly quiet conditions are expected to prevail for 16-20 Nov, 26 Nov - 02 Dec and 05-12 Dec.

Shortwave Radiogram weekend schedules

 

Hello friends,

During the past two weekends, we saw a few examples of the new MFSK wide modes providing an improvement over the conventional MFSK32 and MFSK64. While the tests were mostly inconclusive, we did learn about the performance of the wide modes based on your reports (thank you!). John KL4YFD is using this information to work on different versions of the wide modes. We might be able to try these in future broadcasts. 

Videos of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 177) are provided by Scott in Ontario (Saturday 1330) and Jeff in Oklahoma (Sunday 2330 UTC). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. The analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.
