Ghana's media industry to pass broadcasting law

[Presenter] An initiative by some civil society organizations and players in the broadcasting industry is working for the passage of a broadcasting Law. The chairman of the Advocacy Steering Committee for Broadcasting Law, Brefi Appenteng, talks about the proposed law.

[Appenteng] We think it will have a very positive impact on the development of broadcasting. The whole idea is to make the industry grow and be positioned such that it can compete with similar institutions anywhere in the world.

[Presenter] Mr Brefi Appenteng how far has the process gone?

[Appenteng] We are actually hearing completion of the draft now. We expect that within the next few weeks the steering committee will be in a position to pass on a proposal of the law to the various state institutions which must then move it through the processes for it to become a law.

[Presenter] It is not easy for passage of such a law coming from the civil society sector, do you foresee any problems getting this law through parliament?

[Appenteng] We think that various state institutions that is, the National Media Commission, the Ministry of Information have shown a lot of support for the document and for an environment that will allow broadcasting to grow in an orderly fashion. And so we expect that they would support and help get this law pushed through the system quite quickly.
