"Cycling with Frits"
David Swatling first began interviewing artists who were HIV+ for Radio Netherlands' culture program Mirror Images. In 1989, he talked with Dutch photographer Frits de Ridder about his portraits of homeless men and women living with AIDS in New York City. In 1992, de Ridder organized the AIDS Related Art exhibition during the Amsterdam International AIDS Conference. Two years later, he presented his final exhibition just a month before his death.
Several years later, David discovered a cassette tape the photographer had made for him as a birthday gift. Directions accompanied by classical music promised "An Adult Trip to the Countryside." David had never actually taken this very personal guided tour. So he packed his recorder and his memories and went "Cycling with Frits".

Alex de Waal is at the forefront of mobilising Africa and the international response to it's HIV/Aids epidemic. ''It is women who are at the backbone of African society. HIV/Aids to a large extent has been caused by the irresponsible behaviour of men and it's women who are now picking up the burden and carrying it.''
De Waal is in the spotlight reflecting on Africa, Aids and it's future.

"Sinking, Swimming or Simply Paddling"
The term "failed state" first emerged in the 1990s. Today it is being used more and more frequently to refer to countries such as Somalia, Haiti, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. According to the US National Security Council, "America is threatened less by conquering states than by failing ones".
An independent research organisation, the Fund for Peace, has even begun issuing an annual report that ranks weak and failing states. But what exactly is a failed state? Join Eric Beauchemin for "Sinking, Swimming or Simply Paddling", part 3 of a 4-part series on failed states, produced in collaboration with the Ford Foundation.
